Help a newbie smartphone user

I'm using a smartphone for the first time and I need it to do something which I don't even know whether it is possible for it to do, let alone how to do it. The phone I have is a Samsung Galaxy GT-I9100, and what I need it to do is I need to put a large PDF file on it and a bunch of other texts (these I can put in any format, whatever the phone can take), and I need the phone to be able to show and search these texts.

So, I can probably figure out how to do these things myself, but I just want to know whether it is possible and whether I need to download something and if so what.

It's pretty easy, just download Adobe Reader from the Play Store, then copy the PDFs and text files to your phone. You can do this by plugging you phone into your computer and copying them, email them to yourself, use Dropbox, etc.

(EDIT: Well, I found it. There's an app called Polaris on my phone and I can open .doc files with it, and, turns out, I can even open PDFs.)

Thanks!

How can I open these other files, tho, that are in .doc (I can transfer it into other file types, maybe .rtf, .docx, .txt, and if need be, I guess I could into pdf, but I'd prefer something easier).

Polaris should open those as well, or you can download Google Docs for documents, Sheets for spreadsheets, or Slides for presentations. If you search for "office", you'll find many free ones.
