Best 1080p graphics

My question is whats the best price/performance graphics card that can run a 1080p monitor maxed out?

GTX 960 or R9 280X is probably what you want.

This surprises me more than it should. I always thought the 280X was nestled in between the 760 and 770 and a bit closer to the 770 in terms of performance.

In this case go for the 280X. You might get slightly better driver stability out of the 770 if that matters to you but my 7970(same chip as 280X) has been fine.
