Why my external HD goes to sleep?

I have a 500 gb Seagate HD that I took from an older laptop. The drive was an upgrade and is relatively new. I connect it to my Toshiba L455 with the USB/SATA cable with two USB plugs. I use it to store movies. It was working well up until recently.

Right now, right in the middle of a movie that I am watching, the drive would go to sleep which cause the movie to hang up. Or a pop up would show as if I'd just plugged the drive into the USB.

I'd changed the power option to the max. with which the computer would not go to sleep never. The monitor is set to go off after 15 minutes of inactivity. But the screen was still on when the HD sleeps.

Any suggestion what was the culprit?

The drive shouldn't go to sleep if its being used. Try this.

Go into device manager and right click on the external drive and click on properties, Click on the power management tab and uncheck allow computer to turn off device to save power.

I followed your instruction. I have Windows 7. I saw the drive in device manage. But when the property doesn't have an option to power management.

That's because it's USB. Go into Device Manager and under Universal Serial Bus Controllers right click the USB root Hub and chose properties | Power management. And untick the option to allow the computer to turn it off.

That may or may not work.

you might have to go into the properties of the device to get to the power management. Also you might have a faulty USB port.

I opened up the USB Controlers and it showed a bunch of USB's. The Root Hub does have the power management options.

My Toshiba L455 has three USB ports. The SATA USB adapter cable is connected to the two on the right. My questions are?

1. Do I turn of power management on all of the Root Hubs?
2. Why are there so many when I only have three USB ports?

I have no idea why there are so many root hubs. I could never figure that out. But I would just change them all.
