My main HDD, the only disk in my backup scheduler, is 1TB. My external HDD that stores the backup is also a 1TB drive. I have my entire disk, O/S, files, EVERYTHING, set to back up. The space taken on the main drive is 389GB. The space taken on the backup disk is 343GB. How compressed is the backup?

Depends on your data. Some data can compress better than others.

Data that is compressed already like MP3's won't compress further.

Most backup programs allow you to alter how much compression is used, it's a trade off, more compression, longer backup time, less space used. Which is most important, a faster backup or less disk space used?
