Win 8.1 Want USERS on non-system disk

Hi,

Just installed 8.1 on my first home-built system with a Samsung 128gb SSD as system disk. I wanted to keep ALL user data off the system disk, but naturally, Windows installed the USERS file (together with Docments, Music, Pictures etc) on the system disk and I am rapidly running out of room.

Is there a way short of total reinstallation to get USERS/data onto one of my gigantic new data disks instead of cluttering up the SSD?

Many thanks for help.

Go into your user folder and right click on each of the following folders and click on properties.

Documents
Music
Pictures
Downloads
Videos

Click on the location tab and change the drive to where the folders are stored, click apply.

Just do this. Don't worry about user app data, etc. being stored on the system disk. You're more likely to encounter issues if you move it.

Thanks for that JohnB35! However, I still have the problem.

When I go into my user folder as instructed and right-click on Documents then PROPERTIES, I get the standard box with tabs across the top

GENERAL SHARING SECURITY CUSTOMIZE DOCUMENTS

In the GENERAL tab (the only one with a LOCATION field), the system will let me parse the location address (that is, move the cursor through it), but will not let me edit it as either me or the System Administrator.

What did I mess up?

Thanks!

Hi Voyagerfan99,

Thanks for your response - my concern about user app data being stored on the system disk is this: I have a huge iTunes library, plus AUtodesk, Photoshop and Illustrator libraries. I have hardly begun to move stuff from my old system and my spiffy new SSD is already choked - this is NOT the way I dreamed it would be!

I have terabytes of WD and Hitachi disks sitting empty beside the SSD . . . .

That's because you need to open an explorer window and right click the user library folders, not the folders under the user folder itself.

As for your other stuff, your iTunes library will be stored wherever you point the iTunes library folder to. So just move your music library (as stated above with the other user library folders) and point iTunes there.

For Autodesk, photoshop, etc. all you'll have stored under the app data folders is cache stuff that can be deleted if it gets too full.

Don't click the 'favorites' on the left hand side, those are just shortcuts. You need to go into C:\Users\yourusernere\ , and then you can change them. I've included a screenshot where you can see the differences here:

Many thanks to you all - your advice enabled me to relocate my user data and salvage my SSD.

Would never have thought of that solution and need to do some 8.1 reading! (actually had surprisingly little trouble adjusting from about 10 years of XP).

best wishes
