I will be attending Texas A&M next fall to major in computer science. As part of their policy, I need to choose between a HP Zbook 14 or a Dell Latitude E7450 for a school laptop. Following I have both of their given stats, so please help me choose between them.

Use: Mainly for running code, but also for some 3D modeling (Autocad Inventor) most likely. Also, for playing some video games on the side!

HP Zbook 14
Windows 7 Professional 64
Intel® Core™ i7-5500U (2.4GHz Base w/ 3.0 GHz Turbo, 4MB Cache, 2 cores) Processor
AMD FirePro (1 GB dedicated GDDR5)
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (1D)
1 TB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive

Dell Latitude E7450
Windows 7 Professional 64
Intel® Core™ i7-5600U (2.6GHz Base w/ 3.2 GHz Turbo, 4MB Cache, 2 cores) Processor
Integrated Intel HD Graphics
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L Memory
256GB Solid State Drive Mini Card

Thank You!

Id say the Dell due to SSD, i imagine they are making you pick of those two because IT needs to support it. I dont feel you will see a diff with the GPU but with the SSD; huge diff.

Yes its because there are three to choose from (ones a mac), so they are reduced to like half price for engineering students. Also, do you really not think that the dedicated GPU will have much effect verses the integrated graphics of the Dell? Surely that load on the processor will have an effect. Thank you for your help, your input is so appreciated!

Depends on what you're trying to do. For gaming get the dedicated GPU, but aren't there any ones that have a less expensive non-professional card in them? The Firepro name usually just adds dollar signs.

IMO the intel graphics have gotten to the point that gaming on them is not a issue, not sure about the firepro, generally id avoid workstation cards as they are more of a workhorse, and not a racecar. They can probably game but i feel that the intel may be the faster card in this scenario.

The HP Zbook would be my choice. Although I have and use a Dell laptop (it was given to me in a broke down would not work state) daily I have read to many problems with Dell to buy one. The HP products (desktops and printers) I have owned have been reliably. Good luck with your decision.
