New graphics card

Hi guys! I've recently bought an msi Geforce gtx 960, and call me stupid but I need a hand installing it, I've put it into my computer and when I turn it on its telling me to plug in my pcie power cable, (my last graphics card didn't have one) so I'm stuck as to where I plug it into on my motherboard, I got the 8 pin port on my graphics card and it came with an 8 pin - 6 pin adaptor, but that's as far as I can get lol, also my motherboard is an msi h81m-e34, anybody able to help me would be much appreciated, thanks

There should be a 6 pin PCIE connector from the power supply that goes into the card.

Looks something like this. The cable should be labeled like in the photo.

I have just uncovered some cables from the psu, however there's no 6 pin connector, although there is 2 4pin molex connectors, do I need to buy a molex - 6pin adaptor?

To be sure what is the model (manufacturer) of the graphics card you own? I have only seen GTX 960s with 8 pin plugs, that is the plug you would need from your PSU.

The card probably has one in the box if you bought it new.

The card has an 8 pin connection on it and an 8 pin-6 pin adaptor came with the it, however none of the connections coming off my psu are either of these

ahh damn! its just a basic computer I got which I'm upgrading the parts for so I'll be getting a new psu, I'm looking at the CX600M as its only a few quid more than the 500M. My processor is a Intel Core i7 4770, do you think this would be okay in general or also need an upgrade?

Guys sorry to be a pain but my new psu arrived today, I put it in and when I turn it on it all lights up and the fans starts to go and then it cuts out and won't stay powered on.. any thoughts?

First things first, check that all cables are plugged into everything correctly, I find the best way to do this is completely remove the PSU and all cables from the case, and put it back in and then rewire everything. Second suggestion is to make sure the RAM is seated properly on the motherboard. Then I would say to check and make sure the motherboard is properly grounded to the case using the standoffs and screws.

After that, if it still doesn't work, I'd suggest trying to plug in a different power supply, without changing anything else, and be sure that it doesn't do the same thing.

Wow.. as simple as that! When I put it in I must have knocked the lock on the ram which popped up slightly, pushed it back in and now it's working, thanks!
