Worried I may lose HDD, even when I backup on HDD and computer both seem to go down at some point and have lost certain things already. Is it bad to plug HDD into computer all the time, does that damage it over time? Should I put important things like photos on DVDs?

What hard drive do you have? Some hard drives fail more then others. You can use cloud storage such as dropbox or Google drive.

If you're having problems across multiple systems, maybe you could take a look at your usage pattern.

Brand and model number please?

The one which broke-

WD Elements. Did mind you take it on holiday wrapped in t-shirt- maybe it got knocked. Recommend a better one?

The other one I bought was a Samsung 1Tr drive, this one I just bought so not broke yet. Any recommendations for better one?

So are all of these external drives or are you using internal drives as well? External drives seem to fail more often then the internal drives simply for the fact that they are always on the move and the fact they are being plugged in and unplugged all the time. Vibrations and shock will kill an external drive really quick. You have to be very careful with external drives and moving them.
