Nexus 7: Can I upgrade from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat without Lollipop?

I just got a Nexus 7 and I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade to Kit Kat without fully upgrading to Lollipop first. I found a website that shows how to downgrade to KK, but it seems pretty technical. Right now I have a notification saying Android 5.1 is available, but is there a way to just upgrade to 4.4 or whatever the latest KK is?

So it will upgrade in stages? I really want to be sure, because I'm reading horror stories about upgrading to Lollipop, and I don't want to go there! :) I still have KK on my S4 and it works great. I wouldn't mind keeping it on the N7 as well, if what you suggested is how the upgrade process works.
 
Uhm, nevermind I guess. I just checked which version of Android I have on it and it says 5.0.2. I guess new N7s already come with Lollipop installed. I'll see how it goes then...
