Computer turns off after awhile

Turns off after about 5 minutes of turning it on. I suspect that that CPU/GPU(I don't know the difference between these) is overheating and causing it to turn off but I am not certain. Also planning to repair it but not sure if it can be repaired. Any steps on how to find out what the problem is and how to fix it?

P.S. I have little knowledge about computer parts but I am learning so please be patient with me. Just joined this forum and this is my first post.

Systems shutting down can be caused by overheating or bad hardware such as hard drives.

A few things you can do.

1. Install a temperature reading program to determine what the cpu temps.
2. Open the case and check for dust inside heatsink and fan for the cpu. If there is dust, use a can of compressed air to blow it out.

Looks like this machine has an Intel processor so use the program called realtemp to check temps.

I will try downloading the program before it shuts down. Also, will it do harm to the parts if I use a paintbrush and vacuum to remove the dust?

Can of compressed air works wonders. Just hold the fan so it doesn't over spin. If its really dusty, you will want to do this outside.

Also, make sure you keep the can upright so you don't expel any of the liquid onto anything.

I tried turning it on but it switched off at the start up screen and cannot be turned back on, the monitor says 'Cable not connected' or something like that.

That just means its not getting a signal for video. You definitely have an issue somewhere. The motherboard may even be shorting out against the case. Is there any dust inside blocking the fan?

That only happens sometimes. What do you mean the motherboard is shorting out against the case? Like short circuit? There is some dust in the fan but the fan still spins.

Tried turning it on again but this time, it didn't even get to the start up screen. It switched off after about 10 seconds.

Tried again and this time it got to the start up screen and shut down. Any help?

If that computer has no warranty left, open side panel and give us picture of it's interior.

There, I don't know if the picture is posted though. Here is the link: http://imgur.com/jaslRJR

So it's random and seems to shorten. I highly suspect that PSU capacitors are leaking (=broken). Trying with new PSU might solve problem. That FSP PSU is very common on OEM computers. Good quality expect capacitors that are low quality, probably because lower price.

And I did NOT say you should try to "repair" that PSU. Forget it. Try with another but do not try to repair.
