Re-Installing Windows 7 Home Premium

Hi All!

Trying to re-install Windows 7 over my existing one.

Done it before but can't seem to do it now.

This error comes up:-

'the selected partition requires at least 8437 MB free space'

I've deleted loads of stuff from my hard drive and no joy. What's going on?

Are you completely wiping the drive? The partition you're selecting (which is probably the 100 MB reserved partition) isn't provisioned to be large enough on the drive. This partition isn't dependent on how much data is within the partition, it's just the data boundary.

If you already backed up your data onto another drive or device you can just delete the existing partitions and Windows will create its own again when it installs onto the blank disk (which will dump all data off of the drive).

Windows 7.jpg This is what the screens saying (see attached jpg) I got loads of space haven't I?

Yes, everything of any value to me is on external hard-drive that is the Samsung drive seen in the picture.

^ That.

I'd also remove your backup device while installing to avoid any 'accidents', however you should be OK removing the three partitions from Drive 0. Then you can have Drive 0 selected and hit next of which Windows will repartition the available space and reinstall.

So I will unplug everything externally from my computer. The external hard-drive etc. So then I just need to delete the partitions. Not done this before. Sounds risky, is it?

If it's ok to go ahead, do I just restart my computer and F12 to boot from Windows 7 disc, then an option will be there to delete partitions when I try to re-install Windows 7?

Yes, unplug any external disks.

Reboot and use F12 to boot to the CD. When you get to the screen above, click Drive Options and just delete all the partitions listed there and click next. Windows will automatically partition and format the drive.

Thank you guys. All up and running now. Still running a bit slow my computer. Would this be because all the updates aren't installed yet?

Also SuperAntispyware picked up 20 threats, it's reduced now but a lot of tracking cookies. Is there anyway of getting rid of these tracking cookies?

On a brand new install thats all superantispyware will catch are tracking cookies. What are your system specs as far as cpu and how much ram you have? Shouldn't be slow on a new install.

Make sure you install all chipset and other drivers from the manufactuer and intel. Also update the BIOS if there is one. It will index for a while causing the HDD to be smashed, but that will settle down.

bios updates cover specific problems that may or may not be happening on a specific pc.they should only be done if you are experiencing the problem that a particular update covers.i would never just update for the sake of updating.

I have 5gb RAM, AMD Athlon (tm) 64x2 Dual Core Prcessor 5600+ 2.81Ghz. 64 bit operating system. Windows 7 obvs.

What does all chipset mean? and how deo I update the bios?

That was the case in 2004. Almost every bios update i have seen says 'stability improvements'. And since there is a chance that its on an original version, checking for updates is a standard part of faultfinding hardware issues. Secondly, updating bios is no longer the risky business it once was.
