Suggestions for next GPU

I have just upgraded my entire rig apart from the GPU. My current card is a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X, I'm currently running one 1920x1080 but thinking of linking up to a 4K TV or multiple 1920x1080 monitors. Which cards would be my best choices? Or would I be better off waiting for something that might be in the pipeline?

i7-6700k
Maximus VIII Hero
16gb DDR4 G.Skill Trident-z 3000mhz
SM951 256gb in PCI x4
Windows 8.1 pro 64bit
Super flower 650w (this can be swapped out for something bigger if I need the extra juice)

R9 290X is among best cards currently available. No single GPU is so much faster that there is point to upgrade. I recommend waiting for 14/16nm parts.

While I agree the 290X is still a good card, the 980 Ti is about 1.5x better. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1439?vs=1496

Benchmarks with probably old drivers. With new drivers different story http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/R9_380X_Strix/23.html

Not even Titan X is close to 2X faster.

Edit: I probably read someting wrong or Geoff edited his post very quickly. Anyway, considering 980Ti is very expensive and not very future proof, price/performance difference ratio is quite bad IMO. R9 290 Crossfire or waiting for better single GPU's are good choices. Also read somewhere that top end cards prices go up.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll probably end up waiting a little longer and see what comes next. Do you think it's definitely worth the switch to Nvidia even if that means a much bigger outlay?

I didn't edit my post. The OP never mentioned if price was a concern, and if someone wants one of the best video cards out right now, the 980 Ti or Fury X are the ones to get right now.

Where is it falling short on your performance expectations?

290 can play everything on the market at decent settings, the price/gain ratio is pretty unfavorable to lay down a chunk of change on a 980ti or similar.

Per others I'd see what the next gen brings in a couple months and buy one of those instead.

Keep in mind you can sell the 290 to recover part of the cost.

He said he is upgrading to either a 4K display or multiple 1080p displays. If you game at 4k, a 290 won't cut it.

980Ti is not enough for 4K gaming even on todays games. So those who want 4K gaming, need either multi GPU setup or much better GPU than 980Ti (14/16nm parts may be enough but any 28nm part won't be).

Depends on the game...

980 Ti @ 4K:
Battlefield 4 Ultra - 56FPS
Battlefield 4 Medium - 92FPS
Crysis 3 Ultra - 41FPS
Crysis 3 Low - 69FPS
Shadow of Mordor Ultra - 54FPS
Far Cry 4 Ultra - 40FPS
Far Cry 4 Medium - 59FPS

Pair it with a G-Sync monitor and it would be perfectly capable on medium-high settings.

I wouldn't say those are acceptable gaming FPS. Sub 60FPS on shooters is IMHO a pain. I agree, you need 980Ti SLI to play on 4k.

Depending on the game, medium settings could yield 60-100FPS. Which is why I said in combination with a G-sync monitor, a single 980 Ti would be able to get by with most games at 4K on medium settings.
