Full Tower

I haven't had a full tower in 20 years but I'm getting old and can't do much with my computers because it's so cramp. I also have a regular power supply they made 5 years ago with all the wires which is a bag of worms. So would it be better for me to get a full tower and the new power supplies where you only use the wires you need?

You don't have a bunch of hard drives then you really don't need a full tower, thats the whole purpose a full tower. For most poeple, a mid tower case will suffice.
and the new power supplies where you only use the wires you need?

You would be talking about the modular power supplies. Using modular units help in keeping the case and parts cool as all those extra cables will block ventilation unless you have a good case for cable management.

I think our definition of full tower might differ. I full tower is made for extra hard drives. A full tower is larger than a regular computer case where as you can put extra hard drives, DVD's, Blue Ray and whatever you want. I agree with you about the modular power supply but it's also a lot easier to work with. In since I'm not most people as a mid tower case isn't working for me they have other cases outside the full tower that I'm not Formiliar with which is what me post is about.

What system requirements do you have?

Most of the platforms will be 'the same' but bigger, such as a 1151 ITX board has the same socket size as a 1151 EATX board.

Is there anything specifically that you feel is 'crampy'? There are also external units for just about every add-on currently as well. Most of my systems don't even have mechanical storage or DVD drives, which cuts down on the 'bulk' a lot.

You are probably talking about currently having a mini-tower, not a midtower.

No I'm talking about a midtower. I'm 68 years old and I have a hard time with it. Today I wanted to put in another SATA cable but there was no way I could get my hand in there to do it. You are right about one thing and I should just go with SSD drives for my data because I have 7 WD 1TB Hard Drives that are not SSD drives. Maybe I just need a better case. I have two desktops and I'm not happy with them. I also have a Antex 750 Power supple and it's got enough cables to supple two computers and what a snake farm. So with just SSD drives, the right midtower, and a power supple that I can add my own cables I might have something and suggestions is needed, thanks.

If you have 7 hard drives, what sizes are they? I can't imagine someone of your age needing any more then say 2 hard drives. If they are small drives then that is the problem. You should get either a couple of 1tb or 2tb drives. And I have a feeling you really don't need 750 watts on a psu for your needs.

7 TB of SSD would be pretty expensive.

You could also consolidate your storage with a couple 4 TB drives, I recently did that with my file server (7x 1 TB -> 4x 4TB). Made the build a lot cleaner and less packed-full-of-crap ;)

What case do you have currently?

I've got an NZXT H440 at the moment. That's a mid-tower case but it's quite large (it's quite tall but not really any longer or wider than most mid-tower cases I've come across) and because it has no optical drive bays you can fit a lot of hard drives in it. I think if you use all of the supplied brackets and mount one or two of the disks on the bottom of the case (I'm not talking about the 2.5" brackets on top of the PSU shroud) you can put 6 or 7 hard drives in it which is enough for most people. If you can afford it, that might be the case for you even if one disk has to be put in an external enclosure or something. I paid about £100 for mine. In the US it's on Newegg for about $120. It's a very nice case indeed, the best I've ever used! It's damn near silent too.

7 disks is a lot, that's quite a lot of disks to go wrong. Have you considered replacing some of these 1TB drives with a couple of 3 or 4TB drives instead? You could have two 3TBs and a 1TB or two 4TBs. Or maybe even one 6TB drive.
