water damage

One of my sibillings tryed to start my Dell XPS after spilling a jug of water in it so I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is electrical damage would I need to replace motherboard and the power component or just one of them. If anyone could help me I would be very grateful.

It depends on what area was wet, and whether or not it was fully dried before trying to power it up. Did it turn on?

...a jug of water? Like an actual gallon jug?

Well they said like their large cup with is like 1/2 litre (1/6 galleon ish) and tried turning it on right away mainly on the bottom of the case, would be bottom of the motherboard around the video card area

1/2 litre is a 16 ounce bottle of water, which is a lot. If it spilled on the keyboard and dribbled down inside then you should have tipped it over upside down and let it dry out for a couple days and not try turning it on.

Yes but sadly I didn't get the chance to since I was out of the house I'm not sure if they were even using the computer and spilled it or if the just tripped. I know that they tried turning it on right away, very big mistake but nothing I can do now. Once I got home I inspected it and noticed the bottom graphics card area of the motherboard had some moisture near and on it so the wires or connection are most likely not working. Currently when I plug it in and press the power it gives me a short (2 second) white light on the power button. I would like to know if anyone knew which is more likely to be the problem and which should be replaced first the motherboard or the power box

Wait, is this a laptop? If so, it's very likely it's done for, based on what you're describing. Best bet at this point is to take it to a legit computer repair place (no, Geek Squad doesn't count) and get their opinion.

If the PSU/battery shorted out, there's a good chance it took multiple other components with it. It's usually never isolated to one area.

I'm confused. You posted this in the desktop section but it sounds like a laptop. Where exactly did they spill water? Was it on the keyboard? Was it on the tower itself?

You're going to have to leave that for quite a while to dry out. It's going to be hard to dry it out, I think you'll have to left it stand in a fairly warm or temperature-controlled room for a few days or maybe a week or so and try again. There's no guarantee it will work again either and you may damage it further by turning it on again unless you are sure it is completely dry, so depending how old this PC is you may need to consider chucking it out and getting a new computer I'm afraid. :(
