Can I upgrade my P4 2.8 ghz ht to a Pentium D.


My computer is a dell dimension 4600i
4gb DDR clocked at 256
640gb hhd(Sata)
Nvidia Geforce 6600GT

It depends, it sounds like your system is based on socket 478, I believe Pentium D were released as 775, which isn't compatible. Even if it did work (or if your system is actually socket 775), it's a waste of time and effort, of which you will see negligible gains.

I think those older Dell boards were picky about chips too and might not be supported, even if the socket is right. I wouldn't bother.

How is this an upgrade, or even relavant? He asked about upgrading to a Pentium D.
