Someone has offered to sell me a used Dell Optiplex for $400

i7-4790 3.6ghz
500gb hd
8gb DDR3
Onboard graphics
Windows 10

How do you feel about this cpu? Is it outdated? I dont think I will need more than 500gb storage and I will most definitely get a new graphics card.

To me this seems like a pretty awesome deal. Is this too good to be true? Is there anything I need to look out for here? Once upgraded will I be able to play modern games without issue?

Thanks!

That CPU is only 2 years old and is still being sold for as much as $300 usd. So I'd say yeah, its a good deal, but I suppose it depends on what PSU it has (and if upgraded, what form factor can that optiplex chassis accommodate)

Also, can it fit a full length GPU? You'd want to probably check these things first to make sure any planned upgrades will fit.

I guess it also depends too, is the ram just no name stock chips, is the HDD a beater and old now? Do you plan to get SSD for the O/S..

What do you mean it is still being sold for as much as $300? It says $800 new on their website. Also it looks like it has a 255w PSU so I will go ahead and get a new one of those and a case. It looks like it has DDR3-1600/PC3-12800 ram. I cant find much on the HD though.

He's saying the Processor itself is being sold at $300 on other sites.

I don't know if you want swap that whole thing out of the Dell case. The motherboard might not be a standard ATX form factor.

The i7 4790 cpu is $309 USD @ Newegg

Where do you see it being sold for $800, It was never $800, even new

Honestly, for $400 it might be too much, considering the PSU, Case, and mainboard are pretty much gonna need replacing.

If you could get it for $250, then the CPU, RAM, and HDD could be reused and would take a nice chunk of the cost of the rest of the components you'd need.

The optiplex was never meant to be a gaming machine, but some of those pieces could be nicely reused, for the right price. I just dont see $400 in value there

Which optiplex is it? Should be an exact model number on the back or front. It might not be worth $400.

If you have the slim tower case, then its not really worth it as you can't put a decent video card in it and upgrade the power supply to run it.

Yeah, I guess it really depends on what needs replaced.

Could potentially end up being almost $700 total.

Definitely could be.. but maybe the seller is willing to bargain down/?? If you could get the ram and CPU for a good price and junk the rest..that could be a good start.

That's my system at work, but with a few changes.

The CPU is a previous generation but will still perform fine. But in the end it all depends on what you plan on doing.
