New Build Advice

Hey guys!

I mentioned in the ROL thread that I was selling my current build to go Skylake.

I am receiving $750 for it from my dorm floormate... Just my luck, my high school friend is moving and her parents are offering $20/hr to help them out! I should by the end of this upcoming weekend have $950-1100 to build a new rig... My most expensive yet.

Quite jumpy sitting here building parts lists... I really want to utilize the Fractal Design R5 Windowed for this build. :)

Being the little kid I really am, I created a white on black designed build with an accented mobo, RAM, and other components.

Of course I'll probably end up with something similar to the performance build HERE because I'm ALWAYS looking to keep going faster, and I'll be doing a lot more editing/recording.

I'm always on the border with decisions like this and need some input from the community as far as a Skylake build goes. Thanks! :D

What area is most important to you?

For encoding the i5 will be about the same pace as your FX, for gaming you'll see a noticeable downgrade going down 390->380X. The net result doesn't seem much different
 
Wait for Polaris if you can. They should be on sale within the next few weeks. Maybe even go ahead with the build and run integrated video for a few weeks. Buying a new GPU now is foolish if you have the capacity to wait.

Forgot to mention I'm not ordering until the 2nd to last week of June when I get home to Colorado!
Not sure how much I'll have to throw at it but I'll try to leave as much as possible!

Take a look at that. All I did was change the cooler, swap higher speed ram for a few bucks extra, and a R9 390X.

And ditch all those extra fans. The case already has enough fans for your needs.

Not bad.. I was looking at the H80i before and thought it might be too loud.. That's why I added the extra fans :p
Little above my price range but I may be able to push for it.

Didn't see that one! Will add it to my saved list... I made some impulse decisions on my current build and the only thing I wasn't happy about was the CPU.
In gaming, I know the 6600K does better, so I decided to add the PowerColor R9 390 into the equation to bring it back up.

I won't be ordering the parts until June 18-19ish, so there can still be adjustments. I may also ask my parents to loan me ~$100 for the build, which typically involves me giving them the MIR cards too :p
If they do so, I'll either stretch for a better GPU or throw an SSD in.

Well when you are getting closer to ordering it, you could ask for input again. As Darren has said, new video cards are coming out right around the corner and maybe in time for your purchase.

And if you're only running on a regular HDD and not with a SSD, you may want to consider grabbing WD's Caviar Black series drives instead of the Blue.

True. I'm reading up on it and I'm surprised to see how well priced it is for completely wiping Hawaii all over the floor.

I was reading about the new AM4+ Zen CPU's from AMD and would love to wait, but can't go 3 months with only Intel HD on my laptop :p:p

You want to do editing and you've chosen a Radeon?

...get the GeForce for editing. CUDA makes a big difference if your editing software supports it. Trust me!

Pricing isn't too bad for the new GTX 1070! I seriously am! $380 USD (apparently) compared to a $300 R9 390 that performs over 40% worse?!?!

Worst case I drop the liquid block and go with a Hyper 212 until I can afford it..
 
The 1070 would probably be the most ideal card for you. What video editing software do you use? Some photo editing software can take advantage of CUDA too.

Sony Vegas Pro (11), but I'm looking at getting After Effects or Premier Pro..

Photoshop CS6 and Cinema4D

For After Effects and Premiere Pro I'd recommend CUDA so get a GeForce. I think Vegas uses it too.

For After Effects I'd get the most RAM you can lay your hands on. 32GB would be ideal if you're using it a lot. I used to have 16 in my main machine but I upgraded to 32 when I started using After Effects a lot because when I was rendering previews in After Effects within seconds I was hitting about 14.5GB RAM usage. Those previews just eat the RAM.

ooo yeah I use Sony Vegas Pro on 8GB currently and it seems to struggle quite a bit.... May do that down the road and fill the other 2 slots but I'm not sure where I could cut back here without going back to air. :confused:
