Is Windows 10's built-in antivirus good enough

I have been using AVG Free with my Windows 10. But AVG is getting to be a pain in the ass. A lot of upselling that I don't really want.

I thnk Windows 10 come with a good anti virus firewall and built-in antivirus. Anyone using it without a third party antivirus?

How good is it? Do I need AVG?

The built in windows defender doesn't work that well. AVG has sucked for quite a few years, AVG 9 I believe was the last good version they had. You can try Avast, but you need to do a custom install and only check a few boxes or you'll get popups. You just have to register your email address to keep getting it for free every year.

I've personally thought Malwarebytes scans on occasion coupled with the built in Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials is plenty. This of course assumes the user has some common sense with viruses and what not to do. If you want an extra layer of protection Avast is good. Having an Adblocker extension on your browser (I use uBlock) helps more than anything though IMO.

That sounds dangerous ;)

As with anything else, it's great until you get some kind of infection. I wouldn't really rely on Windows Defender by itself. Even their 'security essentials' antivirus product was discontinued and didn't perform to a large degree.

to the OP: if you do not download software and just browse safe side of the internet and are cautious about the links in emails, i think windows security should be ok. But for more active users who download and install apps, i would recommend t use free Comodo Internet Security. And in firewall set "Custom Ruleset" for the firewall. It will always ask if new app tries to connect internet.

Default windows security is junk and has been for years. I've been very happy with Avast for the past few years, I do recommend doing a custom install and only checking the 3 main protections or all the others that are installed will cause popups in Avast.
