what to look for

Well its looking like time to upgrade from my ole am3 720 and Radeon 4870. I've been thinking about going intel route this time, but not sure what to get i5, i7, maybe something new is out I don't know about? And I hear some new gpu is out, the 1080. But since I've been out the loop for a while, I've come back to my all knowing nerds to help me. I do game on it. What should boards, cpus, and gpus should I start looking at? Still open to amd too, just haven't kept up with who has what in the past few years.
 
New platform, 1151, requires new DDR4. Also, Haswell-E on the enthusiast side for socket 2011-E if you have a high budget.
New AMD platform launching in a month or two on AM4, which is DDR4 based.
New GPUs out for 1080 on the Nvidia side. A couple of new Radeons are launching like the 480 which will be ~$199 and offer similar performance to 290/390 cards.

Bunch o new crap coming out and recently released. i5 6600K or i7 6700K are reasonable bets if you don't want to see how AM4 pans out, did you have a particular budget in mind for upgrades?
 
Kaby Lake should be coming out soon... Might want to wait for that.


@beers, it's socket 2011-v3. :) As cool as X99 chipset is, it's getting close to the end of life for that beast. Q2 2017 will probably see a replacement for the enthusiast level stuff.
 
Well for now I guess around $1200 if need be I stretch that in a few weeks. I don't think I'll go the enthuaist route though, 900 for a cpu is a bit crazy. I'd like to go with DDR4 to kind of future proof as much as i can though.
 
You should definitely wait out for the Kaby Lake releases. Good news is that Kaby Lake is using the same socket as the skylakes (LGA1151), so you don't have to worry about ridiculous motherboard prices because that won't be a newly launched product.

Kaby Lake is scheduled to be released in around September this year.
 
You probably just need upgrade your CPU, mobo, RAM, GPU and possibly SSD.

By the end of the month, we should see GTX 1080, GTX 1070 and RX480.

It is up to you to determine if you wait for intel Kabay Lake or get skylakes now.
