Please help, computer died when plugging in keyboard

I tried to plug in the keyboard to my boyfriends computer in the USB drive without knowing that it was broken, and the computer just instantly shut off. I feel terrible, the computer won't turn on or do anything at all now, it's completely dead. The first few times we tried to turn it on it started up and wouldn't get past the post screen, then died. No it's not starting at all. The broken USB drive that i plugged it into had the middle pulled out of it previously.
What happened? Is there anything we can do to fix it?
 
Is the usb port on the back of the motherboard or the front of the case? If its on the front of the case, you can unplug the usb cable from the usb header on the motherboard and try booting up machine. Could have blown the power supply as well.
