Help on upgrading my PC

Hello

I currently have a desktop computer with the following specs:
  • Motherboard: ASUS F2A85-V
  • CPU: AMD A8-6600K APU (i know, bad choice)
  • RAM: 16GB of RAM(2x4GB ADATA, 2x4GB CRUCIAL)
  • 1TB HDD
I also have 2 monitors. I recently became aware of the fact that my gaming capability isn't as good as i thought it was, so i decided to start upgrading my PC one part at a time. I was thinking of buying a gpu first(have had the new RX480 on my mind) and continue with cpu(accompanied with a motherboard to get rid of the useless FM2 socket) later. But maybe this isn't the best course of action. Maybe is should go with the CPU first. My intent is to use the PC for gaming. Any help from the more experienced ones ?
(My price range is about 150 € for each major piece)

Depending on your OS license you may need a new OS as well. But first off you are looking at an upgraded power supply. Definitely would be a cpu bottleneck if you got the 480. Start saving for a new build.

Instead of allotting 150 € for each major piece, I'd determine an overall budget based on what you want to do, in your case and like most of us, you intend to game.

Once you have that overall budget, save the funds and then order all the components at one time, or at least the core components (mobo, cpu, ram)

Obviously we all need to do what works for us, but doing it all in one shot makes sense in my eyes - you already can use the current rig till your set on the new rig!

@johnb35 As far as power supply goes i am running 600W and I have Windows 10.

@Laquer Head I get what you're saying, but what i am traying to ask is which component do I need more: A new cpu or a new gpu? (because I think that my the 6600K's cpu capability isnt that bad)
And to ask one more thing, do APUs work well with an additional gpu?

Definitely a dedicated GPU if you want to game with any sort of playable frame rate and graphical quality.

Depends on what games you play. The 6600K isnt -awful- with a dedicated GPU. I probably wouldn't spend much more than the $199 the 480 is though. You should be fine with that CPU for most games. If you want to roll a new CPU/MB/RAM down the line you can transplant the dedicated GPU into the new build too, so it makes more sense to buy as the first piece.

I have a 6800K APU in my HTPC that kept up pretty well when a R9 290 was installed.

@johnb35 Actually it's 450W. The model is PSU FORCE FO19XD 450W. My windows 10 are retail license.

@beers I tried playing Fallout 4 and the framerate was stuck in 15fps, low settings. What you are saying is what I had in mind.

@johnb35 Does it have to be a brand like Corsair or Evga? Doing a quick research I found PSU NOD PSU-007 700W ATX at a cheap price, so could you confirm that it's good enough ?

@johnb35 is bang on...Get a Corsair! The PSU is literally the backbone of your system, if there is one piece of a PC you dont want to skimp on, its the PSU

Grab a Corsair and have true power and piece of mind!!!!

If your really wanting to upgrade. Get you a new power supply and a good video card, both good enough to keep. Don't get a cheap power supply. Stick with Corsair/Seasonic/EVGA, depending on the model/PC Power&Cooling/XFX, depending on the model. Get one in the 600W to 750W range. In the 4 quarter both Intel and AMD are coming out with new CPUs. Save some money till then and upgrade the CPU /motherboard and memory.

If you can find the EVGA 500 watt unit such as this one it will be a little cheaper then the corsair.

I realize you are in Greece so it may tougher to find a good psu. But as Laquer Head as said, the psu is the backbone of your system and shouldn't be skimped on. You don't want to buy a cheap power supply to run a good video card and down the road it goes pop and takes other computer components with it.

If you're penny conscious then best buy has some evga 600w units for $29.99.

They aren't the best in the world but comparable to the Corsair cx line , and hard to beat on price .
