Temp on old OC cpu?

I'm running an i7 920 (DO) @ 3.8Ghz with a Noctua NH-D14 air cooler.. and have recently run MSI's afterburner monitoring/OSD whilst gaming in some of the more recent games.. Witcher 3, No Man's Sky etc my GTX 970 is running fine but according to a friend the 920 is running too hot hovering at around 70 degrees & I need to reduce the OC. I haven't had any performance issues & apart from the fans cranking up their volume everything seems fine otherwise.

Is he right?

Is that core temp or package temp?

I think the specs on the Intel site indicate TCASE 67.9°C on the heatspreader. If it's stable then I probably wouldn't worry about it.

I've never seen my i7 920 d0 @ 4.0ghz go over 70 degrees C under gaming load. I've seen it go over that in synthetic benchmarks, but I only have a Zalman ZNPS9900 on it. The D14 should be cooler than that... perhaps you can try reapplying your TIM to see if it'll go lower.

Though of course its better to run your cpu as cool as possible, you will be surprised how much heat they can take. 70C is not so high and I doubt will much effect the lifespan of the chip, even if you ran it hot it would probably take years to die, you will most likely upgrade a long time before it dies.

You could try and improve the case cooling or the thermal paste might be too dry, try giving it a nice new shiny coating of that sweet paste.

^^

I replaced the thermal paste on my little brother's FX-6300 and the temps dropped about 5C with the stock cooler.
