Lady gives me her hard drive after her grandpa dies. Running osx 10.10.2, until he formatted hard drive with windows.

I'm at a loss as my bootable usb loads then I get big crossed out circle.
Disk utility is gone since hard drive was formatted. When hitting alt during power up it shows bootable device which is my usb with the Osx on it, but. Not the hard drive.

What's next step here to get osx back on this hard drive

Boot to your OSX install media and use Disk Utility to format the hard drive.

Disk utility is gone as the hard drive was formatted with windows pc. So all volumes including efi one are gone. Its. Blank jhfs+ hdd. I put the osx on usb and it loads it then at end shows folder with question mark

I missed this part it seems.

Can you remove the SSD and plug it into a Windows machine and wipe it?

The crossed out circle makes me think there is an issue with the setup image of OSX on your flashdrive. If you have another Mac, I'd just recreate it.

Yes I took it out used transmac to wipe it, popped back in. Used transmac to make the dmg bootable on usb. And the images is what I get

The only thing I can imagine is Transmac didn't correctly make the OSX install media.

Do you know anyone else that has a Mac?

Hold down Command + Option + R to boot from internet recovery, then use disk utility to format and reinstall the OS. The error when trying to boot from your external media is likely because it was created with a different hardware set than what this MacBook is.

I always forget about internet recovery.

Lady took it to Apple down road, as ive tried everything here and from online. They said the Motherboard was bad, whether its true or not, im not sure. Just seems im using a OS that wasnt out of box, and unsure as to what was originally on there since internet recovery wont work.
