Building my 3rd rig, time to put my 7 year old to rest.

Putting the 7 year old to rest and looking for suggestions on a new gaming rig. I have put 2 together in the past so I'm all for getting parts and putting it together. Just some notes on myself:

  • I did dabble a little in overclocking before but don't really care to get into that again.
  • Kind of interested in liquid cooling depending on how difficult it would be for a newbie and price.
  • Budget of $1700-$2000.
  • Games played: Overwatch, FFXIV. Who knows for the future.
  • Don't really care about style so best case for the price / cooling.
  • Maybe a new monitor but I could probably research that later. Within budget or separate haven't really decided.
  • Hopefully something that last another 7 years!
I would love suggestions from you guys as I have been out of it for quite awhile. Thank you in advance!

Liquid cooling is largely pointless if you're not overclocking outside of looks and bragging rights (which is fine in its own right). A $30 air cooler is going to perform just as well at stock clocks.

I don't have time to make a parts list at the moment but if I were you I'd shoot for something like an i7, 16GB DDR4, GTX 1070, SSD, and a 1440p monitor. I'm personally a huge fan of 1440p as the visual bump over 1080p is massive but doesn't require the horsepower/wallet that 4K does. My R9 390 handles 1440p pretty well at higher settings and 60 FPS. A 1070 would have no problem at 1440p.

Might also look into a 120 or 144Hz monitor.

Kaby Lake is literally right around the corner. I'd look into those when they come out. Technically, they'll work on the Z170 boards, but expect Intel to come out with a newer chipset that offers more features.

After a few post on different forums and combining builds from different suggestions this is what I came up with. Looking at this being a final check/tweak post before I click order. PC will be used mainly for gaming. Overwatch, FFXIV, L4D2, TF2, SC2 etc.

Case: NZXT H440 STEEL Mid Tower Case (does not come with optical drive bay)

Optical Drive: LG USB 2.0 Super-Multi Portable DVD

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-Z170XP-SLI

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 SC

RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 220-G2-0750-XR 80+ GOLD

HDD: SanDisk SD8SN8U-512G-1122 X400 M.2 2280 512GB Internal SSD (I have a 1TB normal HDD I'll install from my old rig)

Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home - 64-bit - OEM (I am still runing Vista so I am a bit behind)

Also have some thermal paste.

Looking for recommendations for a monitor as well. Thank you for the advice.

I'm heading out for a 2 month trip next Thursday and looking to order within the next few days. Kind of on a time crunch but I do have a laptop I could use as an interim. Is it supposed to be a huge performance boost from Skylake? Also not sure how much that would beat against my budget for the upgrade.

If you're going on a 2 month trip within a week... why bother ordering now? It's going to take Newegg like 3-5 business days to ship your product to you. I'd honestly just wait until Kaby comes out.

Kaby's definitely going to be faster. It's a decent bump from Geek Bench numbers. It'll probably vary quite a bit depending on the application you're using, but the new Kabys are definitely going to be faster. However, with the release of Kaby Lakes, you'll also see a new chipset (Z270) coming on the market.

Ordering the parts to a location where the trip is taking place. Normally I don't have time to play games a crazy amount but will have lots of off time on the trip. Also having some problems with my current rig.
