My dumb question

Can anybody suggest a reasonably good anti-virus that I can install onto 2 desktops (Mine & Mum's), for around $40 to $60 a year? Had a lot of rubbish and vicious and annoying stuff lately, and it is time to do something.

Honestly, I would suggest going paid. You get better protection. I have worked at an actual computer repair shop and I have seen some serious ****. I suggest Bitdefender or Kaspersky. Bitdefender lets you install on 3 PCs for a price that is within your budget. Go to their website.

Free Avast is ok but it harasses you constantly.

Not true.

So have I.

I suggest Bitdefender
Not bad. Bitdefender free is perfectly fine though.

Kaspersky
I've found Kaspersky to cause issues over the last few years.

Which is why I don't recommend it anymore. Doesn't help that Avast and AVG are now the same company.

If anyone is going to pay for anything, pay for a copy of MalwareBytes Premium.

I dont know what you guys are experiencing. I've used Avast for years with no issues and certainly no 'hassling' as you guys seem to have experienced.

???????

You just have to do a custom install with Avast and uncheck everything but the first 3 items on the list. Might not look like this on the initial install as this is when its already installed and you want to change something. I get very few popups and love the protection it gives you.

Maybe some people don't understand checkboxes...

Not trying to start a fight, but what better protection have you noticed by going paid? I work in a computer repair shop right now and I see just as many if not more computers with paid AV that have infections than those that have free AV. Maybe a bit more active real time protection and stuff like that, but not sure what else you get for being paid that you couldn't accomplish with a free AV paired with MBAM and maybe ADWCleaner.

This thread has prompted me to install Avira free though. I sell the paid version at work (and Avast) and probably should know what I'm selling people. :P
