Budget Laptop for College. Help!

Ok I need a laptop that's around or under $500 including Windows 8.1, an SSD, and a decent Core. This is for a friend and this is exactly what they want but I'm having trouble finding a decent laptop with those perks. It doesn't need to be a touch screen. And I would like it to be a decent size not too small but just enough to fit in a backpack maybe. If you guys could help me out it would mean so much! Thanks!

Why Windows 8? 10 is arguably superior (it is) and 8 won't have support for a whole lot longer. SSD's might be harder to squeeze into a $500 budget. I'd avoid HP's budget laptops, they seem to break down easily from my experience at work.

So I guess 7 years isn't very long for you.

Go find a refurbished machine on Newegg like a Dell Latitude E6430. That should fall in your price point.

Plenty of software still doesn't work with Windows 10. I have a legal firm as a client at work. I just did a workstation refresh with all Windows 10 machines. The DICOM radiology disks they receive have a DICOM viewer built into the disk. It doesn't work natively with Windows 10. I need to run it in comparability mode.

Fair enough, but how many of us use and require this specific software. Not a real reason for the other 99% to avoid Windows 10..I know thats not what YOU are getting at, but I've heard people use obscure and very much industry-specific software/hardware as a reason for average users to avoid the operating system,

At the end of the day, Windows 10 is pretty smooth and will be ideal solution for most people.
