Internet Explorer

I have a laptop which I purchased in 2009 and it is still going strong, a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. I have never updated the Internet Explorer and I am receiving messages saying it could do with updating. I have gone onto Internet Explorer - Microsoft Download Centre - Windows Internet Explorer. It is recommending I download Internet Explorer 9 (32 bit). Is that the correct upgrade I need and is it fairly simple to carry out? Any help is much appreciated - thanks in advance.

Most likely you have Vista installed and IE 9 is the latest for Vista. I highly suggest to stop using IE and use either Firefox or Chrome or a different browser.

Hi johnb35 and thanks for your reply.

I do have Windows Vista Home Premium and rarely use Internet Explorer but I have just received a Jacqui Lawson e-card and I cannot view it as the link takes the card to Internet Explorer to view. I do use Chrome but I think that isnt going to be supported is it soon? I have Firefox too. Can I view a Jacqui Lawson card somewhere else please?

You must have IE set for default web browsing. You can change that to whatever browser you want.

Go into control panel and open default programs click on firefox or whatever browser you want to use and click on set this program as default.

Thank you for your replies. I have gone into control panel and changed the browser to Chrome and can now view the e-cards. But I notice that there is a message saying that Chrome will no longer receive Google Chrome Updates because XP and Windows Vista are no longer supported. Perhaps I should change the browser to Firefox - do you think that would be better for me? Thanks a lot in advance.

You should move off of Vista because after April of 2017 it will stop receiving security updates, just like Windows XP

Exactly. Also, Firefox will stop support for Vista and XP with firefox 53 coming out early 2017. You better start looking for a newer machine.

Thank you for your helpful replies. I knew about Chrome not being supported at some stage but wasnt aware Firefox will go the same way. Will my laptop eventually not function at all?

I love my little laptop which was about £350 in 2009. It had everything on it ready - word processing etc. I was looking at laptops in Tesco some months ago and they were much less money than I paid. I made some enquiries and was told that there is very little on the laptop, that you have to pay for word processing etc. I would be lost without a computer so am more than happy to get a new one, if that is the case.

I like going on the internet, looking at this and that and emailing friends. I like to use the word processing typing letters etc. I dont do any downloading of things and do watch programmes catching up on bbciplayer and itvhub. Can you please suggest the best place to go and which brand/type of laptop will be suitable for me and rough prices please. Many thanks.

You'll still be able to use it but at reduced efficiency so to speak. No browsers will hardly support it anymore. I would highly suggest getting a new laptop before April next year. If you are talking about Microsoft Word then that doesn't come installed on laptops. And it if it does, its only a trial version to get you to buy it. There are free programs that do the same thing like Libre Office, Open Office, Google Docs.

If that is all you do, you don't need nothing fancy. An Intel I3 with 8gb of ram would suffice. I would recommend staying away from HP laptops.

Thank you for your helpful reply - I didnt realise that there were free programs for word processing - that is good, so I wouldnt have to purchase a word processing package! Could I download one of those you mention now, so I can see what they are like and are they easy to download?

I typed in Intel I3 and loads of stuff came up, could you be more specific please. I have really enjoyed this HP laptop, had it since 2009 and not had any problems with it whatsoever so wonder why you say stay away from HP but I do respect what you are saying as I dont have the experience that you have at all, so I do appreciate the info that you are giving me 100%. What sort of price and which retailer would you suggest.

I have loads of photographs and documents on my laptop, would I be able to transfer them to a new laptop? Thanks a lot.

Yes, remove the drive from the laptop and use one of these to transfer the data.

or just get a big enough usb flash drive to transfer the data. If you get the adapter you'll have to take ownership of the folders/files in order to be able to view and transfer. A little more involved but I can help with that as well.

Google docs is just a online website you use.

libre office - https://www.libreoffice.org/
Open office - http://www.openoffice.org/download/

Both are compatible to MS word/exel so you can open and view docs made in office.

An Intel I3 is just a decent dual core processor, would recommend at least a i3 6100. I also work on computers part time and have been for 20 years. Ran into a lot of issues with HP laptops. You can do what you want, just recommending not to get HP's.

You can still use Vista, Just use the Pale Moon browser.

It's asinine to think that just because a Comp can't get so-called security updates it immediately invalidates your machine. I have never updated my computers and I NEVER got a virus. And I know for a FACT being a member at plenty of other computer forums that people still get malware even though they let M$ monkey with their machine with updates. Especailly not turning off M$ updates to drivers. That's a HUGE mistake right there.

Now how on earth do I not have malware you may ask? Because I don't browse and us my computer like an inept clown. I also use safeguards. VooDoo Shield Beta, Sandboxie, NoScript and Imunet or Bitdefendewr Free.

But I digress. Since your primary use of this laptop is office orientated and Internet related, you could install Linux Mint. That would be a huge upgrade in terms of keeping your computer secure. In fact, you wouldn't really even have to use any anti virus. Well, you could install Imunet just as a feel good felling, but it is really not needed as Linux gets very few viruses. Not saying they don't exist, but it's out of the scope.

Just some food for thought. I will now prepare to be ridiculed by the lords of M$.

I'd suggest LibreOffice over OpenOffice as OO isn't updated anymore. Libre is an offshoot of OO I think and basically just a more updated version of it.

You're supporting the use of Vista?

Exactly. Useless security rant aside, advocating Vista is a bad idea these days any way you slice it.

I'm saying you don't have to get a whole new computer just because of updates. Despite Vista being a crapy OS. He more than likely can stick 7 on there and use Vista drivers. That's what I done with this laptop.

If you're spending 100 bucks on a copy of Win7 might as well just buy a used laptop that has it already loaded and very likely better specs than what you have now.
