LAPTOP BROKEN HELP NEEDED

I was using my HP pavilion Laptop which I have had for quite a few years now, but has consistently worked fine. The disk reader isnt in the laptop anymore so I plugged in my external disk reader, which made the laptop instantly shut down.
When I turn the laptop on now, the fans come on(very loud), but the light on the power button does not come on and neither does the screen on the laptop. What does this mean? What do I do?

Probably broke your USB port, look at it and see if it looks damaged or any of the pins on the inside got bent. It's shorting out from the sounds of it.

Look carefully, because that sounds exactly like what happened. Might have fried the port too.

Can also try pulling out the battery, disconnect power, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect power (not battery) and see if it starts.

I just pulled the battery out, and connected the charger. When I started it up it did the exact same thing as It does with just the battery;Turns on with the fans on loud, screen not coming on and no light on power button. Is all my data stored on the laptop at risk?I've taken another look at the USB port and it seems completely fine to me, it just looks the same on the inside as the other ports.

Yeah unfortunately, it sounds like you shorted out the usb port and done some damage. I agree with Darren on this. I would check your external to make sure that usb plug is not damaged as well.

So do you think it is fixable? And can I get back all my stuff stored onto it if its not?

Your data is likely fine, you'll just need to pull the drive out and put it an enclosure or docking station to access the data. All your symptoms suggest power issue of some sort, I just always like to do a good hard power cycle when diagnosing laptops.

If the plug is bad (what I suspect), then you'll need it replaced or at the very least disconnected from the motherboard. If it's a plug right on the board you need a new motherboard, which means you should just get a new laptop usually. If the USB plug is on its own board then those are much cheaper and easier to replace.

Do you feel comfortable taking it apart? If not you're gonna need to take it to a shop to have them fix it. What specific model is this (likely under the battery).

I'm literally so stressed over this. I don't even know what to do about it now. If I gave it into a local computer repair shop do you think they could probably fix it?

Yes. Seriously relax about your data, it's incredibly unlikely that it is gone. Any semi decent shop should be able to diagnose your problem and pull the drive out to put in an enclosure. I work in just such a shop. :)

You did mention the other card reader is missing. Is there an opening on your laptop where it was? Something might have found its way in there and shorted something out as well.

I've never known a card reader to come out of a laptop since its attached to the motherboard. Are you thinking maybe the plastic insert that prevents damage is missing?

Sorry I must have not been clear enough, I wrote everything above at like 3AM. Basically my old disk reader is jammed and stuck inside the laptop, hence why I had to use an external disk reader.

Thankyou for that!Do you think the actual laptop is repairable aswell though?Sorry I did write everything at like 3AM so I probably wasnt that clear. I meant the disk reader where CDs/DVDs are put in, not the card reader. The built in disk reader is stuck inside the laptop jammed, which Is why I had to use an external disk reader which broke the laptop.

Take it to a shop. I'd guess at this point that the jammed disc reader is causing the short.

I'd definitely hit up a repair depot and get someone to take a look, could be a number of things, as mentioned.

In regards to your data, unless the hard drive is toast and that is the issue - youre data would be fine and can be recovered by external mean. If the issue is a dead hard drive, well that may be a catastrophic data loss..it happens.

As stated though, hit up a repair place and see what a technician can find out for you.
