Today the PC turns 7 years old, and today also marks 3-1/2 years of me being it's owner. I got this PC from the previous owner.
Story time!
So 3.5 years ago I really wanted a gaming PC. I spent countless hours on CyberPowerPC.com configuring several dream builds and trying to save up for them.
I started asking around at my church during fellowship time if anyone knew any pointers on starting a build. An old family friend of ours told me he had an old PC he'd give me for free. His son had built it for him a few years prior and it no longer booted up, and sometimes it'd shut off like someone pulled the cord.
I offered money for it but he said I could just have it. I tried going the Phillip J Fry "shut up and take my money" way too, but he insisted I took it. So I did.
When I got home I set it up on my desk and plugged everything in and powered it on. I just got a black screen and the BD drive would open and close repeatedly.
Back then I didn't know what the hell I was doing so I took it to micro center to get looked at. The Micro center guys were drooling over my PC and they were all like "nice rig man." About $350, a windows install, replacement RAM, and the removal of 300 viruses later, I had a working PC!
Since I've owned it, so far I've replaced all the case fans because the old ones lost bearings and seized up. I've also replaced the power supply and I replaced the ram and added more (4x4 gb, from 2x4gb). I've also added a card reader to it and replaced the heat sink and I've had to reinstall windows twice.
As all of you know I have had the worst of luck with The Blue Beast but I look on the positive side and see each part failure or release of magic smoke as another opportunity to learn about electronics. Of course I'll never forget the time I killed one of my graphics cards... when installed my card reader I had to remove one of my video cards to be able to get to the USB header. And I set my card down right on the carpet by the cat. R.I.P. CrossfireX.
Anyways, that's the tale of the Beast. It hasn't caught on fire yet and I hope it'll still be running when I graduate in 2020.
And everyone please stop dissin' my rig
I know it has its problems but it's not THAT bad, sheesh!! I honestly take offense to it sometimes I really can't help that it has the problems that it does, guys.
