Uses for an old IR receiver?

I have an old USB IR receiver that has been collecting dust in my junk drawer for years now. Can I use for anything or is it useless now?

Normally the only thing you'd use an IR receiver for on a computer is a multimedia remote for a TV tuner.

I have a fully-loaded universal remote with an Aux mode that lets me program the buttons to do anything. Could I program these things to control my FusionHDTV card?
