Pricing of the Seagate BarraCuda ST2000LM015

According to the Announcement in PC World, the BarraCuda ST2000LM015 was targeted at $55. But when I searched around, the cheapest I can get one is $89.99 in Amazon.

Where can I get one for $55? Or they figured in the initial higher price and let it drop to $55 in a year or two?

No where in that article does it say a 2tb drive will be $55. It does say a 5tb drive for $85 but that is a lie. You can barely get a 1tb drive for $50 now.

It does say that
Of course, when it comes to value, there's no question: Samsung's 4TB SSD is about $1,400. The 7mm 2TB BarraCuda is about $55, Seagate officials say.

But I too am suspicious of those prices... would be amazing if they turn out to be true.

Ok, I had to read it a third time. And I just now realized after looking it up is that has 128mb cache. Still, there is no way it would be that cheap, article was just written back in October so thinking it was a typo.

This paragraph is 2nd or 3rd before it ended . . .

"Of course, when it comes to value, there's no question: Samsung's 4TB SSD is about $1,400. The 7mm 2TB BarraCuda is about $55, Seagate officials say."

It ends with "Seagate officials say".

I think they are just capitalizing being the only game in town for now. WD and Toshiba are far behind.

In a week's time since I started to pay attention to this item, I have seem the price dropped from 91.99 to 89.99. Today, it is 84.99. That's directly from Seagate (thru Amazon).
Maybe it is galvanizing towards the $55 target.
It's OK. I think I still have at least half a year before my internal 1TB is filled.

?????????????????????????????

Where are you getting that information? WD is the leader in hard drives. Toshiba is just a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things. WD is THE NAME in hard drives. Full stop.
Seagate is a distant second both in product range and in sales numbers.

SSD wise neither company has anything that could be called robust or bleeding edge in terms of their products.

MSRP and street price vary wildly in PC hardware. You will never find a $55 2TB hard drive in today's market. Maybe 55 pounds over in the UK but not 55 dollars.

Yeah but in today's age, who wants a 32mb cache drive with only a 1 year warranty? Standard is 64mb and a 2 year warranty.
For me, I don't care on either point. Then again, I'm probably not a standard user.

Are there any tests that actually compare performance across cache sizes? I bet the difference is smaller than you'd think :)

Ancient Chinese proverb say:

Buy a man a refurbished hard drive, corrupt files after a year
Buy a man a new hard drive, it'll last, and he'll buy you some beer.
I am unfamiliar with this proverb :p

Both OEM and retail 1tb blue 64mb cache drives are only 2 years on newegg. Microcenter is same thing.

I don't find any other 2TB 2.5 inch 7mm harddrive other than the Seagate's. Do you have any specific model numbers for WD or other manufacturers?
