PC not giving output to screen.

Hi,

So my PC is around 9 (I know, I know I need another one!) Years old. It was working fine, until I recently moved house and had to transport it. I plugged everything in at the new house and it now won't send a signal the the screen.
I've troed all the obvious things (clean dust, new wires ect to no avail). I also took the heat sink off to see the cpu, there was some rather alarming grey goop underneath it, but after further reading iveI docoverdis that this is just thermal paste (?). I can't see anything else that is blindly obviously wrong....

try removing the RAM modules and re-seating them. Remove them completely and plug them back in ensuring that they are properly in the slots. Do that also with the daughter boards as well. They are the boards plugged into the mother board or main board.

Hi! Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately I've already tried removing and re-installing the ram modules. Would it matter if i put the ram back in different slots to what they were originally plugged into? While I was cleaning them I forgot which persific slots they were in.

Does the pc have a video card or does it use onboard video? If it has a dedicated card, you can try removing and reinserting it.

If your RAM slots are colour coded then the first two should be used for a matched pair of RAM modules. It doesn't matter which module goes in which slot as long as it's either one of the first two slots 1 and2. They should be numbered 1 to 4 if you have four slots. the other two slots, 3 and 4, should be a different colour.

As said though moving computers that have sat in one place for years can cause problems and the most obvious and easiest to sort is modules, such as RAM, graphics, network cards etc, coming slightly unplugged. If you have taken all the plugged in modules out and ensured they are all seated properly it then starts to get much more difficult I'm afraid.

Also try using 1 stick of ram at a time, its possible one stick is bad and causing the black screen.
