Budget SSD for older laptop refurb.

Basically want input on which SSD to grab for a 5 year old Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545.

Looking around $100 CAD$ +tax and found 2 drives that fit the bill with reasonable 'on paper' specs.

What would you go with to extend the laptops life another year..ish

For an old laptop I would just buy whatever is cheapest, Sandisk is cheap, I've had a few Sandisk ssd's and they are fast enough and seem solid, well I've had no problems yet and its been a few years.

The TBW on the A-Data SSD is close to double (160 vs 280 TBW).

I think general experience will be pretty similar.

Not sure if those drives are cheap enough compared to the MX500 to warrant choosing it over the Crucial.

Different league of sata drives though. Most budget ssds offer near regular hdd speeds on random read/write performance. Only major improvement over mech drives are usually sequential speeds in those budget things. I'm not sure how budget the A400 and the SU650 are, but the MX500 offers fairly similar performance to the Samsung equivalent.

What are you going to use the laptop for?

If you are only doing light things like browsing the internet and watching videos etc, I assume you use your sig computer for most demanding programs, then save your money and get something cheap. My Samsung 850 evo is way faster than my cheap sandisk, but its hard to see any difference between the two in light use, but damn the sandisk feels way faster than a 2.5 inch laptop hdd.

Last week I upgraded my mothers 4 year old laptop with a cheapo sandisk ssd, now it feels like any of my Samsung ssd desktops, but of course not as fast as my NVME .

totally agree.put a 480gb sandisk in my desktop and am very happy with it.

Yeah if it's not a heavy use laptop just whatever SSD is going to be miles better than the 5400RPM turd drive it came with.
