PC slow to open 'things' and sound lag

So I decided to upgrade CPU, mobo and ram as my old I5 2500k started running hot and seemed to be at the end of it's life.

Please bear in mind that I dont know a huge amount about PC stuff.

My problems are.

1. When opening any program/app it takes from 15 to 30 seconds for anything to happen. Once the program/app has started it runs as intended. This could be a game of cards or my latest game craze DayZ.

2. During and after I download, specifically games from Steam my pc will start to lag both screen and sound. This is so bad that I have to hit the reset button, I cant move the mouse to press restart.... Other downloads seem fine.

3. Random sound lag when surfing the net. It is like a stutter that lasts only 1 to 3 seconds.

I5 6600k (not overclocked) – new
Corsair H100i
ASUS PRIME Z270-A - new (I had a new MSI Intel Z270 PC MATE but swapped it for the Asus)
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series DDR4 2400mhz 4gb x2 - new
Asus GTX 980
Kingston SSD A400 240gb - new
1TB HDD
Corsair HX1000 1000W
Windows 10

Edit: Temps - neither the CPU or GPU ever go over 65c when running games or even during diagnostic testing.

I've run memtest86 for 24 hours with both sticks of ram at the same time and then 12 hours for both a sticks of ram singly. The results were error free.

I ran Prime95 for almost a whole day and no errors. I also ran Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool 64bit and no errors.

I have tried a new and old SSD, a different GPU, a new mobo and I still have the same issues.

I am at a loss with my limited experience with these things and I am not throwing anymore money at it. So I thought I would ask for some advice before I return the CPU and RAM. Those are the two components I havent been able to swap when testing so surely it is one of the two, even though memtest86 and Prime95 test have no errors.

Some advice would be helpful.. Thanks

So you've done a fresh install of windows? if you haven't, then that is your problem. You can't just use the same install when switching motherboards that have different hardware in them.

You have the standoffs for the case installed correctly and in the correct places? Is the motherboard using the latest bios revision? Board could be faulty.

Yeah the stand offs are ok... I have tried two new mobo's. The first mobo I tried was a MSI Intel Z270 PC MATE and I had all of the problems listed above. After that, a friend helped me out with a new ASUS PRIME Z270-A, same issues as with the MSI board. The Asus board has less the sound lag when surfing the net, it's just a moment here and there. Rather than 3 secs with the MSI board........... With the ASUS board, I left bios alone and had issues mentioned. I then updated to latest version and issues remain.

Thanks

So you had no issues until you upgraded from original motherboard? You've tried 2 mobos with same issue. I doubt its the cpu so the culprit could be bad ram. Have you tried running memtest on it?

Yeah after two brand new mobo's, I think that isnt the prob........... I did 24 hour memtest86 with both sticks of ram = no errors. I then did each stick by itself, 12 hours each = no errors. From what I read, even that may not be a long enough test! .... As I say I dont really know what I am talking about ;) but I think it is the RAM but am close to sending both RAM and CPU back, I feel bad sending the CPU back if it isnt faulty :(

I would send everything back and get different. Without extensive diagnosing switching parts, you won't know. A computer shop would have different cpu's and ram to test though. Diagnostic fee would be less then $50 for most places. Don't go to a big box store though.

I bought the CPU and RAM through Amazon UK. I actually just spoke to them and they are sending a courier out to collect them tomorrow, a refund when they receive items. It feels kind of strange sending both items back and then buying the exact items from Amazon once I receive a refund. Oh well :)

Thanks ever so much for your time

I will give this post a *bump* in a week when the new parts arrive, if that's ok. I would think, fingers crossed, that I will be issue free at that point !

/facepalm ..... It turns out that the problem was a WIFI dongle antenna I purchased from Amazon a couple of years ago, it's worked fine for my 2500k . I used drivers that were auto installed by windows 10 and then drivers that came with the dongle, same issue with both.

Anyway, I received new parts. Put it all together and same problem. The only thing at this point which wasnt new was the WIFI dongle. So, I used a wired connection and.................................................... problem solved. GRRRR !!!!

I have no idea if I can tweak a few settings to make the WIFI dongle work correctly, so I will stick with the wired connection.

Cheers
