Windows Boot Up Error

Good Afternoon All

I've tried to update one of the old computers in the Kids Bedroom from Windows XP upto Windows Vista, However when going through the installation it came up with a error and wouldn't continue.
Now when ever I boot the computer it comes up with BOOTMGR is missing, press 'CTRL' 'ALT' & DEL to reboot.
I've had to wipe the bios password as I initially couldn't get into it to change the boot sequence to CD ROM 1st but it still doesn't want to boot up from that 1st and still comes up with BOOTMGR is missing still and now it wont allow me to re install windows.

Any thoughts please ?

What are the system specs of this computer? If you don't have the right hardware upgrading to Vista would be a big mistake anyway. Basically need to know what processor and how much ram is installed.

If it only has 1 gb of ram, Vista would be horribly slow. Do you know if the memory was upgraded? At this point, you should be looking at something newer.

Read this: https://lifehacker.com/251733/vista-tip--repair-bootmgr-is-missing-error

Upgrade your RAM to at least 4GB. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=acer+aspire+t180+ram&_sacat=0

Your computer supports up to 4GB of RAM.

Check your hard drive for errors after you repair the bootmgr. Go to the hard drive icon under the My Computer icon. Right click the hard drive. Select properties. Chose the Tools tab and select check for errors. You'll need to reboot.

After chkdsk does its thing. Go to the search in the start orb (bottom left) and enter in search, "event viewer" without quotes. Go to Windows Logs, right click System in the tree and chose find. Search for chkdsk. Highlight all of the log and press the keyboard keys control + C. Paste here or paste in a text document and upload here.

Buy a new computer, a machine this old is a waste of time and effort. A used machine could be had for $100 that would be way faster and work with 7 if not 10 depending on what you get.

If you can't/won't replace it I'd just stay on XP and clean it up as best you can. Vista isn't going to do much more for you than XP at this point since neither are supported. Vista would run like crap without at least 3GB of RAM.

I agree with what Darren is saying. Though as an alternative, just install a Linux distro with something lightweight as your DE/WM. Most distro's ram requirements are around 512MB. The setup swap as needed, based on your usage case. Swap is so much easier to work with than say a Windows Paging File.

You can always use linux. Otherwise I would stick with XP lot less memory intensive compared to vista.
