Battery Not Charging

HP 2000-299 Notebook PC

My battery indicator states that my battery is not charging. I did a search on an HP site and found a solution that worked for others by deleting items on the DEVICE MANAGER. I tried this process but my battery still indicates not charging. I also found that if the battery is removed and the laptop still works after plugging the power cord back in it means the battery is bad. Is this true? The battery in my computer now is a replacement I bought from EBAY in APRIL 2017. Can someone suggest where I can buy one that will last longer then just 1 year? The original battery lasted 5-1/2 years (2012-2017).

Probably HP, the ones on Ebay are usually chinese knockoffs cheap and cheerful but not reliable. It isn't neccessarily your battery though. The charging circuitry is separate from the powering up circuitry, although they both come from the same place ie the power supply. Just removing the battery and powering it from the PSU is not a conclusive test of a bad battery. You would need specialist battery testing equipment to tell that. So basically the easiest test for you is to replace the battery. if it charges then you know it was a bad battery if it doesn't then it's a fault in the charging circuitry of your computer.

GM Pete.
I'm going to buy a battery from AMAZON instead of EBAY. All I can afford is one for $20 or less. In the link below are the batteries that will work in my PC. Can you please look them over and suggest one for me?
Thank You!

They are all still very very cheap so still all, probably, Chinese knockoffs. The only one I would recomend is the $30.99 one and even that is cheap. BUT seeing as though you need to know whether the problem is your battery or your computer/charger and your funds are limited, then buy the cheapest. If it works and charges then the problem was, more than likely, the other battery. If it still doesn't charge then the problem is with your computer or charger. You never know if it does charge it may work for ever. I have had cheap batteries work fine for years and I have had ones that only last till the guarantee runs out.

ive seen some hps that give that battery warning even when the battery is charging.by not charging do you mean that the computer shuts off when the power cord is unplugged?if it stays on see how long.run it right down and then hook up the charger and let it charge for a while, even if it give the no charge warning.pete is right tho, those batteries are pretty much crap.

I did what you stated and ran the battery down until the warning alert sounded on my PC (15%). I then plugged it up and it started charging! It got up to 21% and indicated "plugged in, not charging" (this is what it read before) WTH!
No, the PC doesn't stop running when I unplug it. But, the screen gets dim.

depending on your power plan setting the screen will get a bit dimmer when on battery power.next thing to try is to leave it on the charger overnite and see how long it runs unplugged the next day.what im getting at here is hp is very finicky when running non factory batteries.if it runs for a decent amount of time on battery power then it is the hp charging software giving a false reading.there are,i believe fixes out there for this.ive googled them for my wifes laptop but cant remember just what i did to fix it.

I will try this later on today. I ordered a cheap battery from AMAZON ($14.69). It will be here Monday 12/10/18.

I'd also suggest a BIOS flash to the latest version. That frequently can help weird power quirks like not charging properly and the like.

HHMM not saying a bios flash wont sort it but be very very careful OP. Bios flashes can, (and have in my case a while back,) brick your computer.

Okay, I did this just awhile ago. ^^^^^^^^
I unplugged my PC and just let it run on the battery (21%). The battery got down to 12% and a message popped up telling me I had X amount of minutes and 12% battery. After I deleted the message, my PC shut off. I plugged it back in, re-booted, and the battery still reads "12% not charging."

While it's good to be cautious this is a non issue these days. Every major manufacturer basically just has you run a program and it does it for you. I've done it hundreds of times at my last job and never bricked one.

I do agree that HP's are very picky about using original HP batteries. This could be a.charging issue on the motherboard or just a bad battery.

ok,how long did it run from 21% to shut off?even tho it says 12% not charging leave it on charge for 6-8 hours.then see how long it runs until it shuts off.ignore any low battery popups.we just want to see how long it will stay on.the bios flash is definitely something i would try as well.

heres a bit of info that may or may not help as well.
It sometimes happens with new batteries and you need to reinstall the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery from the Device Manager.
For Win7 to get to Device Manger, right click on My Computer and properties, click Device Manager on the left panel, or go to Control Panel and run the DM there. For Win10: Windows key and X.
The top option should say Batteries, expand it and right click Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery => uninstall and restart you laptop.

I received my new battery today. The instructions read to let it discharge down to 2% then charge it to 100% for the first cycle. It also stated not to let it get below 70% for long time storage.
My PC runs much better now and it's discharging/charging correctly. Thanks for all of the advice. :)

glad it all worked out.
Thank you Aldan.
I know it's not an HP battery, but going this route will allow me to save up the money for an HP battery, or equivalent. Is there any brand of batteries out there that are just as good, or better than an HP?

lots of them out there.when i got the one for my wifes toshiba sattelite the price depended a lot on how many cells it had.we ended up paying almost $100 cdn and so far i dont regret it one bit.lol.hp is just real picky about batteries.that last post of mine about going into device manager is one to keep in mind just in case.

And you might be lucky. Whilst I have had problems with cheap batteries I have also had ones that have lasted. As I stated in an earlier post not all cheap Chinese knockoffs are bad, just most of them.
