Cloud Storage?

I don't get cloud storage? I have a network drive I share with my 2 computers with a rj45 into my router. I don't store anything on the Internet. So I want to buy another network drive because mine is getter old but every time I see one they mention Cloud which has no meaning to me and really don't understand it. I wanted a WD Hard Drive that I can use as a network drive between my two computer and hook up the USB3 to one of my computers but to find out you can only input on the USB3 and can't use the USB3 as you would an external drive which make no since to me?

Cloud storage is simply storage that is stored externally from the computer and can be accessed via a wireless connection, typically the internet.

If I understand, you have a hard drive connected to your router and you can access to it from the coffee shop from your phone, table, laptop and so forth and you have a Good password so your the only one that can access your Network drive?

Well, usually the storage is hosted by somebody else, a company. Some examples are OneDrive or Google Drive, etc.

What you are talking about is NAS.

So I should be looking for Network-attached storage and Not "Cloud", so I should just stay away from the word cloud because I have and want complete control over my data?

Yeah, go NAS. More expensive to start but it's worth it in the long run.

If you're accessing files through a public WiFi, I'd setup something like an openvpn connection between your client device to your home NAS.

Some manufacturers use buzzwords like 'create your own cloud at home!', which is dumb to be honest.

Why do you want to split the drive between network and USB? I'd just leverage network for everything.
