Are SSHD's worth it yet?

Hey guys..

I found some old threads referencing SSHD/Hybrid drives from 2016-2017, but haven't seen anything recently here.

It's time for me to upgrade, and I have a few contenders I'm trying to decide between for expanding my game storage.

- Seagate FireCuda 2TB 7200RPM ~$95 USD

- WD Black 2TB 7200RPM ~$115 USD

- WD Blue 2TB 5400RPM ~$60 USD

What's the consensus on reliability with Hybrid drives? Is the WD Black actually worth the extra $20?

The goal is to replace my current 1TB Seagate HDD with a 2TB drive, but I am open to opinions.

EDIT: I know adding a 1TB SSD could do the trick, but I'd rather save the money for RAM if possible.

For game storage, I'd say no, you won't benefit much, if at all, from an SSHD. An SSHD is mostly going to benefit random performance such as OS or application operations, but only to a certain extent.

When it comes to games, an SSD will benefit some titles greatly; most games benefit none. Open world environments generally benefit the most, especially if there are loading screens throughout and optimization also plays a role here. Anthem has been shown to benefit massively from an SSD.

1TB SSDs have hit below $100 as of late; I saw a deal yesterday for the 1TB ADATA SU650 at $85, after discount; It's an excellent SSD for game storage, so it's a pretty solid deal. 2TB are hitting $200, and you could even purchase a used SSD.

When it comes to value, 2TB+ hard disks are still king, but if you play games that stand to benefit from the increased performance of an SSD, it may be worth the extra dough.

Haha.. WHAT!

Thank you for the input! Glad I didn't pull the trigger on that FireCuda when I got paid.

May actually end up buying a 1TB SSD in the next week...

Yeah SSDs are getting ridiculously cheap:

Here's the Intel 660p (an incredibly fast M.2 NVMe SSD) at $213 for 2TB (sold out quickly):
