Having problems with microphone on Skype?

Need to use Skype for an interview but the microphone is a bit quiet, my friend (when we did a test run) could hardly hear me. I have Windows 7 - should I adjust the settings or buy and external plug in one?

Ive played with the boost and other settings. one There are two microphones, one allows me to set it to maximum boost, the other makes a screeching sound if I try and wont really let me

Just change the microphone volume, don't mess with the boost. Also check to see if there is a volume setting within skype. Other than that, you may need a new microphone.
