Scanner not working, but printer is

I recently unhooked my laptop from my printer/scanner and router for the first time in a long time. When I hooked everything back up, the printer works but the scanner doesn't. It's an HP Envy 5530.

Everything prints completely normally, but the computer doesn't even recognize that a scanner is attached.

Okay just after I posted this I had an idea, perhaps I need to redo this setup on the HP Envy and scan the alignment page. Maybe until that's done, it prevents it from connecting to anything.

Not sure why the scanner part quit working but reinstalling the driver software should solve it. Make sure you choose to do the scanning software as well, sometimes thats an optional setting that has to be checked.

Do you know where I can download a driver for this? Do they have them on the HP website?

Do you normally access the option at the printer to scan to pc or use the pc to scan to it? Check here to see if there is a scanning utility already installed that will do it.

Also as long as the HP printer assistant is installed, you should be able to use that to scan to pc. There should be an icon on your desktop for that.

If it were me I would completely purge anything HP related to the printer on the computer and manually uninstall the driver from device manager and reboot.
Then, hook the computer to the network from the printer itself, it should have a utility to let you do this.
Once that is done, scan for printers on the network with the Windows 10 Printers and Scanners settings page and it should automatically install a driver without pulling the whole HP suite.
You can use Not Another PDF Scanner to actually do the scanning, and it has some pretty decent features and is free and lightweight.

I'm of the opinion pretty much all built in printer software is garbage. I have a Canon and haven't touched a piece of Canon software since I bought it in the early 2010s. Windows and NAPS2 do everything I need natively.

In the past, I always used Microsoft Paint and selected "File -> From Scanner or Camera." Now, I am not able to select that.

When I go into HP Printer Assistant and click "Scan a document or photo," it says "The HP envy 5530 series was not found"

What do you mean "on the network?" I only have this one computer.

How do you recommend uninstalling everything related to HP without risking not being able to print anything? I find it really weird that when I try to scan it says that it can't find the scanner or computer (depending which one I'm trying from), but that it has no problem communicating in order to print.

Unless you're connected directly via USB to your computer, the printer is on the network and has an assigned IP address. It passes printing through the network to the printer.

You don't need HP's software to print, you just need the driver for the printer itself, which Windows very likely will automatically pull when you add it in via Printer and Scanners. This screen.

When I click manage I get this screen. Do you see multiple entries in a drop down or does it list it having multiple functions? From the sounds of it the printer part is installed but not the scanner so it doesn't even know it's there. If it only shows one as a printer, it's not detecting the scanner part.

Also what does Device Manager show under "Imaging Devices" (if present) as well as "Printers" and maybe "WSD Print Provider"

If you're not seeing the scanner part. I would remove it from the Printers and Scanners with "Remove device". Once that is done, check device manager and right click and uninstall on any driver you see that is related to the printer. Once that's done, reboot, and attempt to "Add a printer or scanner" button and it should scan the network, find the printer (make sure it's on, not in sleep mode) and install the driver without needing the HP suite. Even without uninstalling the HP suite this will probably fix it.

I am hooked up directly via USB.

According to HP

  1. If you already connected the printer USB cable to your computer, disconnect it, and then remove the printer from your computer.
Search for and open Printers & scanners, and then select the name of your printer from the list. Click Remove device, click Yes, and then restart the computer.
  2. Make sure an open USB port is available on your computer. Do not connect the printer to a USB hub or docking station as the printer might not receive enough power to operate properly.
  3. Go to HP Smart - Microsoft Store and install the HP Smart app.
  4. Open the app, and then follow the guided installation to complete the setup. If the setup does not begin automatically, click the Plus sign
    plus-sign-circle-icon-black-inline
    to add your printer.
