Extract data from GPT hard drive?

Greetings all,

I have a laptop/tablet that was given to me...The screen is cracked....

1)...Using an external interface, connected the SATA 500GB hard drive after removal, to the USB port
on 2 different computers, one win xp and the other Win 7....

2)...The "Computer Management" section shows the SATA is present but, cannot be accessed....

3)...The partition is GPT and healthy...

4)...HOW can I access this drive to pull the data on it off WITHOUT DATA LOSS?..

5)...is there an "uncomplicated" freeware program I can do this?...

6)...If I can do this, would I be able to simply format the laptop HD for simple storage uses?..

Considering XP doesn't support GPT drives and windows 7 would need to be 64bit and bios must be in UEFI mode. So I highly doubt you'll be able to access it as is. You'll need to format it as MBR, but you'll lose data. The only other way to do it is to attach it to a system like windows 10 and transfer that way.

I have a windows 10 64 bit computer so, connect the same way and I'll be able to access the data then?
 
UPDATE----

About 20 min ago, I took a Win 10 64 bit laptop/tablet and pretty much did as I initially started this thread...SAME RESULTS....SEE PICTS...
(DISC "0" being internal computer to the computer).

According to that Disk 1 is 16384gb which means its a 16tb drive, which you said its a 500gb drive. My guess is the enclosure you are using is bad. See this forum here.


It also says GPT protective partition which means you might not be able to access it without original pc. See this.


So you might have to take this in somewhere and have them pull the data from it if it can be. But try a different encloser first or use something like this.

YES, THAT'S WHAT IT SAYS ON THE LAPTOP HD PULLED FROM THE TABLET

I DO HAVE SOME SOFTWARE ALSO I COULD TRY THAT IS USED FOR DATA RECOVERY BUT, QUESTIONABLE IF IT COULD READ THE DISC.

i AM USING SOMETHING A LITTLE BIT SIMILAR AND, DO HAVE ANOTHER SIMILAR ITEM I COULD TRY IF I CAN LOCATE IT.




 
Here's a thought. Are you sure the drive is even any good? You can probably run western digital hard drive diagnostic on it check for errors.
 
Was told from the trusted previous owner that the drive is good, that the battery was bad and, that the previously owner could not locate the power supply and, to add insult to injury. it has/had a cracked screen....
 
Try a different adapter for it and check for errors and get back to us. Other than that, its probably a lost cause.
 
Some "updates" -

DISK 1 -
WDC WD5000LP (ETC ETC ETC) IS A 500GB (465.76 GB HD WITH MULTIPLE PARTITIONS).
This is the hard drive in the windows 10 computer

DISK 2 -
HGST HTS 545050A7E (ETC ETC ETC) IS A 500GB
(465.76 GB HD APPEARING AS 1 PARTITION),
utilized via USB port.


1...What I did is energize MiniPartition Wizard tech (MPWT) in a
win 10 64bit computer.

2...Then connected the SATA hard drive through a different
interface as suggested.

3...Then, did a surface test which found no errors..

4...Looking at the MPWT gui, shows that the SATA laptop HD
(500gb) DISK 2 has an MBR partition!...huh????

5...I selected from MPWT "convert MBR to GPT" as what the computer has
internally, thinking that if I did the conversion, I could then read contents of the 500gh
external (un-cased) hard drive.

6...After the conversion, the "graph" for the DISC 2 was showing the hd as GPT but, with
no apparent "partition" (I think I am saying this correctly)...

7...Why I did the following I don't know but, attempted to see if that hd now converted,
would show up in "My Computer": and it does not...I forgot to take pict!

8....As I type,I have selected "restore partition (or similar and, am waiting to complete....WHAT A FREAKIN' MESS!
Will advise soonest...

Look at the right side of the drive...The "16384gb" number you have stated is written there...FYI.
 
If the original computer is working sans the screen, then I would connect an external monitor, slap that drive back in, and then connect a second external drive to transfer the data to the external drive. Then you can use the original drive as needed.

A new 500GB SSD drive is about 30-50 USD (depending on the make) and about 10 USD for an enclosure if needed so once all done with the transfer, you have a spare external drive.

Please re-read the earlier post where it is said that the power supply is missing, the screen is cracked. making all you have stated improbable if not impossible...

Can't be done.....I had already thought of that/this...

I am aware of this also.......not needed as I use an "interface" with the wiring exposed so-to-speak...

so once all done with the transfer, you have a spare external drive.
First I have to access the drive and, I have noting to place the drive into, thus, the external interface aforementioned......Ruling the original tablet/laptop out as "non-existant", I am back to attempting to read the data stuck on that drive...The MiniPartition Wizard tech (MPWT) is "still at work" in the other room and, I will wait to see what happens and, if I destroyed the data......Was wondering about converting to a different format....I do have some VERY HIGH END data recovery programs but, that is a last resort...

OK, I did not see post #12 mentioning that the owner did not find the power supply, it was buried within the rest of the thread... well, that put a dampener on a mighty fine plan.

Just out of interest, how old is the machine? Young enough to have a USB-C docking station to provide power and screen?
 
Disk manager is showing unallocated so it seems the partition table was wiped. Something simple like Active@ Partition Recovery should work.

You can also try booting to a Linux live CD and see if you can view the data and copy it that way.
