What are the 3 most crucial specs in a laptop?

What are the top 3 (plus a bonus) hardware specifications that a very good and lasting Laptop for essential work and entertainment use should have.
My crucial specs would be:
1. RAM - The memory should be maxed-out, no matter what!
2. HDD - What is any computer without a large capacity Hard Drive.
3. DVD-Writer - There's never enough memory, so being able to output all you can is always good.
4. Processor - If I had an extra wish granted, it would be to get the best in processing power.

What are your top 4 specs?

good points shadyi, very good points.
I guess the importance relies mostly into what is upgradable and what is not due to space or other restrictions.
For instance, the CPU and GPU are not upgradable (that I know of) but RAM is and as for HDD & DVD-W, you can always have them external. not bad at all.
so I would have to change my list then:
1. CPU
2. RAM
3. GPU

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Hi , if you mean a robust laptop (by ' a lasting laptop ') , I 'd suggest you go through this informative article on all important aspects abt buying a rugged laptop.

does anyone know how big of a difference sound blaster audigy would make in a laptop just used for school/dvds/music?

Gpu
Cpu
Ram

oh and to answer your question, a sound card would make a huge difference, i recommend you get an external one

laptop onboard sound isnt very good

I think the order of cruciality (word?) depends on what you'll be using it for. For basic use (office applications, internet, some light gaming, etc) my order would be CPU, GPU, HD, Connectivity. RAM is always upgradable and like mentioned, an external sound card is always available if you require that. Internet connections can be added via pcmcia and the hard drive can be upgraded fairly easily if need be; thats why those two were at the bottom of my list.

ohhh so i shouldnt even the integrated sound blaster audigy deal? if i got a dell e1405 how much would it cost to get an external sound card? is it large and does it stick out far out of the laptop?

Mobile Laptop:
1. Battery
2. CPU
3. GPU

If you will be moving around a lot a powerful battery is a necessity.

Desktop Replacement
1. CPU
2. GPU
3. HDD

HDD can be upgraded but in a desktop replacment you will probably want a decent size hard drive to start off with.
