Old School PC

I have an old PC from about 96, it's not name brand or anything, just a tan PC case. I was looking at it and it had an Intel motherboard from 1995, and a small Western Digital HDD. But one thing I didn't notice was that I couldn't find any Ram in the computer. Do older PC's use other means of memory, because the pc ran but didn't have Ram I believe. What do you think the specs of the Motherboard were..lol.

Older computers like that most likely used SIMM slots instead of DIMM (used for SDRAM and DDR) for their RAM. It's quite possible somebody salvaged the memory from the system before you got it. Have fun finding memory for that, I don't even know if you can buy SIMM RAM anymore.

Oh, I'm not using it or anything I was just wondering what the specs of the motherboard were, and what it used for memory. It is in full working order, but as I said there is no ram. It has the motherboard, 56k card, and 2 empty slots for Dimm or whatever I guess. So can a computer run without virtual memory or Ram?

Yes, you need memory for your computer to run properly.

i had a real old pc also, Artex, or something like that? it's all in pieces on my porch lol. my guess would be the mobo is 140-160MHZ.

whats the OS its running on, the system will probably just have the base 640k running in it at the moment....machines did run on that in days gone by....i had a machine from around 95/96 that only had 640k in it to start with. Until i put 4mb extra ram in it for the princely sum of £120!!

Has a nice PSU for that old of a rig.

The weird thing was that the HDD wasn't connected by any wires, it was just sitting there in a metal holster. I took it out and copied the information down and saw it had connectors, but no wires etc. connected to it. What does that mean, could it have run without a HDD connected, or am I missing something here.
Also I believe it is 733mgz

Okay, wait... you've booted into Windows on this machine?!?

I don't no how but yes. This was my families first computer and it was sitting on my desk in my room untouched for a long time, about a month ago I put it away in a closet, never even opening the case until yesterday. I'll try to boot it up now and see what I can get.

noo, man you cannot boot it 2 Windows without the HD connected, thats where Windows is...

what do you mean 733MGZ...

I just hooked it up and yes it booted up. The weird thing is that I don't think that Western Digital HDD is the HDD it runs off. It says under my computer that the C:/ drive is 7 gigs and the Western Digital is only 2. So I'm not sure. My brother should be home soon, I will upload some pictures hopefully tonight.
