Multiplier on 3800+

I am going to end up keeping my AMD 64 3800+ so I want to get into some more serious OCing. Whenever I change my multiplier to anything besides 12 my computer wont start. Are these chips only allowed to be run at that multiplier or what?

OCing is not so much the "piece of cake" that leads everyone on for the most part. One tip advised for this is to actually back down things like memory timings as well as voltages and the multiplier to gradually increase one thing or another to see where the max is. With the new hardwares you have packed into the system there you will want to find a good coach at an OCer's forum for tips and tricks according to the specs seen in your signature. Keeping those hardwares cooled down will also be a factor too.

well i set my voltage to 1.4 and i can't OC past 2.7 with a 4x HT frequency.

Huh thats weird i have the same cpu as you do and i can overclock it to 2.82 with no problems and i didnt set the 4X HT frequency cause i dont have that option in my bios.

well i just set that down so my fsb isnt too high causing instability. if you can OC to over 2.8 with a HT freq of the stock 5 then 4 shouldnt be a problem.

Only FX chips have unlocked multis, you need to OC by jacking up the HTT (FSB).
You should clarify. Only the FX series (on the AMD side) has unlocked upward multipliers. Most other CPU's are able to have unlocked multipliers as well, however they can only go down.

Set a RAM divider.... try DDR333 to start.
He has DDR2-800, so it would be wise to set the speed to 333Mhz (DDR2-667).
