Athlon FX & Athlon 64 X2

What's the difference between the Athlon FX and the Athlon 64 X2? What makes the Athlon FX superior? It may be a stupid question but I don't know.

Thanks

The Atholon XP model cpus are geared for up to 32bit operating systems as well as applications. The newer AMD 64bit Atholons are geared for just that as well as running older OSs and programs. To run the XP 64bit versions you would need a 64bit model processor. The increase in data path offers faster processing while running at the same operating frequency.

Ya the FX is the top of the line amd's that latest one being the fx-62. They are better for oc'ers but cost a ton. Its like the extreme edition intels, if you know about them. XP is their normal line, not budget but no extreme performance.

Cough.... FX-62 :P

Athlon 32 XP's are 472-pin (Socket A) 32-bit 266-400MHz FSB processors..
Athlon 64 FX's are 940, 939, AM2 socket, 64-bit 2000MHz HTT processors with "Unlocked" multiplyer, ment for overclocking
Athlon 64's are virtually the same as the Athlon 64 FX, without the "Unlocked" multipliers
Athlom 64 X2's are the same as the Athlon 64, just Dual Core

GOOBER ALERT! Socket 940 as well as some Socket 939 model cpus are Opteron not FX models! The Opteron line is a server type processor. The current price tag on an Opteron 185 Socket 939 model is $1,100.

my bad, yes it was the FX-51, but i think the clawhammer FX-53 had a socket 940 counterpart, didnt it?

EDIT: yeah, i had a typo, sorry

actually. the earliest FX (the FX53) was socket 940

"During the Socket 940 FX's reign of terror, many computer enthusiasts saw how much kick ass power the FX 51 had as well as the FX 53. Most people shuttered hearing the early FX chips had to use Registered/ECC RAM because that type of RAM is slower than the regular unbuffered RAM. Today we will be examining the Socket 939 FX 53." http://www.amdreview.com/reviews.php?rev=fx53-939 Not quite a Socket 940 model.

The only differnece between them is the FX series has unlocked multipliers for easier overclocking and a larger price tag. Other than that they are pretty much the same.

Gee? And all this time I thought several X2 models were easily OCed. Even the Operton 165 Socket 939 dual cored server type cpu is more of a gamer's favorite for OCing.

Socket 940 FX-53.

And just like there were Atholon 3200+ Socket A cpus you now have AMD64 Atholon 3200+ Socket 939 models. Once AMD started the 939 FX line the FX name there for 940s soon became the Opteron line.

Opterons were around before the FX series...

I know they they overclock easy. Its jus that he wanted to know the difference bewtwwen them and the FX series does have unlocked multipliers and i bet it overclocks a little better then the X2 series to.

The Opt 165 is the gamer's choice for that line of processor not the gaming line of choice. The FX series has far more gaming intent designed into it obviously over a server type cpu. You choose the processor according to the need there. So far the 3800+ X2 has seen popularity due to costs rather then stepping upto the 4200+ X2 advised for a gaming build. But then gaming cases expect a little more horse power there.

The Opterons are a server type processor there. You wouldn't see many reviews on them at gaming magazine sites for sure. The 940 cpus with the FX label on them was more likely to provide a gaming or OCer type cpu for a server board. It's easy to get confused when you see the same name applied to different cpu types.
