It is becoming increasingly apparent that old security setups like 'Spybot S&D', and 'Ad-Aware' are just not that effective against today's 'Malware'.What i'm going to do here is list today's best programs that will give you a fighting chance at staying infection free. But just remember, it all starts with the one sitting behind the keyboard.

Here are some AV's that are widely considered the 'Top 3'.These require purchase. These all offer free trials.

NOD32 http://www.eset.com/
Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/
BitDefender http://www.bitdefender.com/ca/

Of course there is also the freebies- AVG, Avast and Antivir- which not only has the best detection but contains very good 'Heuristics'.

It's very important to keep your machine updated with the latest Microsoft patches and also the latest 'Java' versions http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp If a new version is available, uninstall all previous versions before installing the new one.

Lots of freebies here so give them a try and i hope they help.

It certainly never hurts to be familiar with several antivirus, malware, spyware, adware, "you name it" programs and utilities since new viruses along with various other types of %@$@ are being written. The AVG Free version lately that would surprise many. With it on the not to load with Windows disabled list in the msconfig utility it came to life suddenly upon coming across one site during search where a trojan downloader was instantly copied to the root directory of the hard drive and a window appeared at that time. AVG not only alerted on it but indicated the exact location. This is the type of protection you want to see with other utilities as well. Since many things can still slip right by AVG having other effective removers and safeguards can be the bomus there to catch the next .... ???

Thought i would add some 'Sandbox' programs. These create a 'virtual volume' in the free space of your hard drive and anything happening during this session is sent there instead of writing to your hard disk.Simply deleting/exiting this session/volume and rebooting and everything is back to normal. Most allow you to decide what to save in this session. Here are some links, free and paid.

Paid ( some free trials)

That can readily be agreed upon there. Besides currently running the Window Defender beta2 there are usually only a few utilities that prove to be the most effective. Three free programs found worth the time to run here are the AVG 7.1, AdAware SE Personal, and for things those two will miss Ewido. When AVG and AdAware missed some new bugs Ewido caught them as seen with the latest scan.

Thought i would add a few newer, freebie 'Firewalls'. In 'Leak Tests', these 2 performed as a couple of the best but need user interaction. If you search, there are downloadible rule sets you can install to minimize the popups. While these are a few of the best, the recent leaktests showed that Zonealarm free finished 2nd last, only beating the 'Windows' filewall(no outbound protection). Here are the links.

i use AVG Free, Adaware Se Personal, Windows Firewall, Ewido Anti-Spyware 4.0, Spyblaster, Spybot S&D...

havent had infections in a while...

The one supposed remover for spyware I came across that was a spy installer instead was called Spy Spotter. I forgot if it is a one or two word name there. That was far from any shareware where you try to buy. It put crap on the drive rather then remove it. Webroot's Spy Sweeper tryout, Ewido, and Spybot S+D worked together nicely to remove a few trojans not seen by AVG, AdAware, and even Windows Defender. Something can always get past even a combination of programs. A good firewall is an added plus is helping out there.
