Building a computer

is it really that hard? how long did it take to gain the knowledge to be able to do it? is it difficult?

i would really like to build one just for fun, nothing to fancy just a machine similar to what i have now, my dell, but it wont be dell. :D

Its actually extremely easy to build a computer. For your first time around I'm gonna say maybe 5 hours from opening the boxes to your first boot. You can easily do it in 3 hours its just sometimes the windows install is kind of slow. If you need any help google "how to build a computer" or "computer building guide" there are actually some pretty decent ones out there.

I built my first computer a year ago and it took about 4 hours to put it all together and turn it on. The only problem I had was the HDD(don't use old HDDs from another computer that haven't been reformated). All you have to do is make sure you're plugging in the right thing into the right place.

dont let this happen :p

I can do a full build in under 20 minutes from start to finish. Mind you I have been doing it for a long time.

You can learn too though. It isn't hard. Your first few times will be a challenge, and it will take you a while to learn the optimal places to put the cards, route the cables, etc. That comes with time. The basic concept, however, is easy enough to grasp.

Ya 20min isn't hard to put all the software together, it only took that long on my 2nd build. But you have to load on Windows xp in most cases and that alone takes over 20 min.

Yeah. 20 minutes is just to build the box. Add 30 minutes or so, give or take, for Windows XP and then whatever for the drivers after that.

Thanks

Nice one, thanks! yeah ive heard loads of people say its easy and some say its really difficult but i'll check out the sites and the threads and learn what i need to know! thanks for that and when i finally build it i'll post it! coould be a good fews months though, bills to pay and that. but its all good! thank!!! :D

My absolute most hated scenario is when I build the box, push the power button and nothing happens. Half the time you have to tear the thing apart again. Grrrrr.

The worse that whappened to me was the power button broke, it took forever to think of that :P I ripped th wires out and just touch them together when i want to power on now.

Except the other half of the time when it doesn't power on its something stupid, like the front panel isn't hooked up right, or you didn't even plug int he power cable.

Hmm, stupid people, everything can only fit in the plug it goes too, its a piece of cake, the only time its frustrating is if you get a bad part and are trying to figure out how to fix it.

see thats what i thought but i was then told no you cant do it because its difficult. but im well going to give it a shot and see what happens. if all else fails i have the CF. so we'll see!!! :D

Seriously you will be shocked how easy it really is, especially if all the parts are good and you have no troubleshooting to do.

Thanks

that also scares me! once i put it together i'll be like yeah sorted and then that part will scare me completly!

I took like 4 hours, because i had to put my case together bit by bit, and then my powersupply was dead... The wierdest thing ever was that i had my WD SATA drive hooked up via SATA power- just for kicks, i got my 120v socket>molex adapter out and plugged into my HDD... the comp started up, the fan in the PSU whirred to life, all my fans spun... my GFX card didnt initiate tho, so i couldnt do anything. And it was wierd powering my whole comp through my HDD.

Umm. You will damage your HDD if you plug the Molex and the SATA power in at the same time. NEVER do that. The HDD manufacturers make that very clear.
