Help, Black Screen of Death :(

OK I'm thinking my HD crapped the bed in my Toshiba laptop, but I'm not 100% sure.

Here is what happened, last night I came home from work plugged the PC in and went to the kitchen to get a drink. When I came back I opened the PC and screen was frozen , then the PC made a somewhat long loud beep and the screen went blank.

Well I powered it off via holding down the power button, but when I turned it on all I got was a black screen and the same beep, and it beeps about every 10 seconds or so.

So I decided to pull the HD and RAM out to see if maybe it would reset them, so after I pull them out and put them back I try to boot it and this time I get as far as seeing my desktop for about 2 minutes, then BAM frozen and black screen of death along with the Death Beep.

I have no clue what happened everything has been working fine no issues or anything. This laptop is 4 years old and I have had NO issues with it what so ever. Oh it is a Toshiba Satellite if that matters.

Well that was rather interesting...................................................I just pulled the RAM out of the first bay and put it in the other bay and guess what.......... I WORKS. So then I took it out of the second bay (the one in works in) and put it back in the original bay and it did the samething, froze screen went black and it had a nice long beep. What in the world could be causing this?

It is possible that one of your RAM sticks has given up. However, that is not so often the case. Try switching the RAM sticks around.

i just had a stick do this in one of the computers at work and we just upgraded it like 4 weeks ago simply put the old back in and it worked so we sent it back to the manufacturer since its under warranty and got it replaced if you dont mind running it on the other board and it works do that and if only one works see if the other is under warranty by going to the manufacturer's website and if it is send it back to them ususally simply costs one way shipping to you and they replace it for free with a new working stick

Well the PC only has 1 256mb stick of RAM, so what I did was switch it from the top slot where it is having issues to the bottom empty slot. When I put the RAM in the spare slot it works. I wonder if one of the slots is dead, but is that possible out of nowhere, with no warning signs at all?

yes it could be possible to have a hardware failure how old is the computer? did you build it or did it come from like dell or gateway or something?

unfortuinately its out of warranty then but more then likely it could be a hardware failure run a memory test on that stick and see if thats the problem it could easily be memory too just test to be sure...

What do you suggest for a memory test? Yeah you wanna know the sad thing....I bought extended warranty and it expired 2 months ago :(

lol just like a car as soon as its out of warranty it dies on you as far as memory tests there are several just google memory test and try one of them they will do tests and show you the results and let you know the problem

Well it looks like I'm in search of some PC133 SO Dimm Ram. I turned on the PC and now I get a small box with blue dashes. Then I shut it down and restart it and it freezes the minute I put my network adapter in. I just hope its my ram and not HD, I'm leaning more toward RAM though
