Is it normal for internet surfing to slow down while an antivirus suite is running ? Also do I need to have a firewall running when i beleive the router i own has a built in one. Would disableing help with the speed ?

Some antiviruses will slow down your surfing time. I switched to Kaspersky and it realy slowed down my computer when surfing the web even with all the settings set to the minimum. I think some antiviruses just dont want to run right on some computers, I loaded the same Kaspersky on my Mom's computer and it runs just fine and I switched back to norton for my computer which runs just fine but I have heard alot of other people complain that norton slows down their PC.

What antivirus suit are you using? Is it Norton? The reason I am asking is because for some reason I have noticed that everyone that complains about norton is using an AMD CPU. A few of my friends use Norton with an Intel CPU and it runs fine for them...This is by no means a fact if the different CPU's run better on certian antiviruses it's just something strange that I have noticed over the past few years. If you are running Norton try switching to AVG and yes I would use a firewall even with a router, install Zonealarm or something...both the AV and Firewall I mentioned are free so give them a shot and see what happens.

Just to update you.

The slow web browsing and 'web AV' issues have been fixed in the newer versions of 'Kaspersky'.It re-appeared a short while ago for me but it was caused by a firefox extension.Once this extension was removed, my browsing is flying once again.

Do you know exactly what firefox extension it was? Whats weird though is I installed the exact same Kaspersky on my moms computer and it ran without any problems and she uses FF also thats why I need to know what extension it is so I can see if I have it and check her PC as well.

I'm sorry, i don't for sure because it happened shortly after a firefox update and thinking firefox was the culprit, i removed a number of extensions. It might have been the 'McAfee Site Advisor' extension as it is well known to cause issues on some systems.

The only extension I have ever installed is Faster fox and FF updates do you think either of these would be the culprits? What is the version of Kaspersky that you have installed no that is not giving you any issues?

It's the latest version which is updated through hotfixes and auto update.

And yes, Fasterfox is recommended for removal when using Kaspersky

Mmmmm I like my faster fox...lol! I guess I will just stick with Norton for now it dont slow me down and I have not got a virus in over a year so I just dont see the benefit of switching right now.

Using 'Norton', it's not the viruses you have to worry about, it's 'Trojan' detection which Norton is very poor at.And Trojans are the Dominant Malware right now.And a big part of this, IMO, is because of the long time between definition updates.Norton is one of the slowest AV's to update- on average 1-2/day, 10-12 hours apart.Kaspersky on the other hand, not only has the best signatures, but updates the quickest and has the most frequent updates.I get 10-15 updates per day which means less window for infection.

I am not to worried about trojans I have the paid for version of ewido and use the realtime scanner and I will scan with A-squared at least once a week as well and neither one ever reports a trojan (KNOCK ON WOOD)...LOL! Actually I have not been infected with anything in a long long time, go figure?
