Pentium 4 clocked @ 3ghz
2 gb of PC3200 DDR
X1800XT
X-FI card... (lower end X-FI)

Dual 2 Core E6600
2gb of PC6400 DDR2
7900GT
X-FI Fatality

How much better is the 2nd system? I know that is a silly question but my friend said that his computer (1st one) will do 3/4 of what mine does in performance... but mine will do it cooler and more efficiently? Is that true?
 
The second computer is much faster. It has a better CPU and GPU. I think your friend is about right for gaming, but stuff that reqiures CPU will be a lot faster then your friends, by far.

But I thought the Processor played a pretty big part in gaming? I know the graphics card is the most important thing but I thought processing/ram was also a big piece of the pie as well?

You don't think my ram is better then his either?
 
The video card besides the faster cpu will see faster speeds in gaming according to reviews comparing the newer X1900 series to the 7900 series cards. Both of those lines are sure to outperform the X1800. A dual cored cpu also has better support seen for multitasking meaning freeing up cpu time for running large apps like many of the newer games out. The newer DDR2 memory will also be a plus for seeing faster memory speeds as well.

Your RAM looks like it would be better, but it's hard to say because he could have high performance RAM, and you may have generic RAM.

Your computer will be much better at gaming, since the CPU you have alone boosts game fps significantly (50FPS in some games!), the video card is also better. And also, the Core 2 Duo is much better then his CPU at everything.

It's either going to be Corsair XMS, Mushkin, or OCZ ram. I haven't made up my mind yet.

On the ASUS P5B motherboard... I don't know if it will work though. Or which one is the best ram to use on a gaming machine.

Well, the FX-62 beat the living daylights out of the P4 @3.0ghz. And the E6600 beat the FX-62 in most tests. So yeah, system 2 is far superior in terms of cpu power and graphics card.
 
Nah I am not talking about the cards... I am talking about full system performance as a whole.

My system vs. his should be just about the same in performance?

Yea thats what I thought... but I read in this thread that my buddy might actually be right because we have very similar graphics cards. Meaning... that our systems might actually perform very similar when gaming. That's what threw me a loop.

Well since you have a better processor by far, and faster ram, your computer will game better then your buddys.

Same model cpu, same amount of memory, ATI high end video card? You should be doing about the same while some will point out the NVidia model video card in the other build. I run everything with an MSI Radeon X1300 Pro and don't seem to have any problems.
